Hi,

I was going to buy myself a shiny new 5870 to replace my aging (And non-Windows 7-compatible) X1950. However, looking at how prices have spiralled, would I be better off buying a couple of 5770's at £260ish or waiting until the 5870 actually comes down to a reasonable price (ie back down towards the £300 mark)?

get the 5870 when its price come down. from what i know xfire drivers are usually pretty bad, plus 5870 gives you more performance, consume less power, and produce less heat

i say get a single 5770 for now then if you feel the need get another, at mo ive had my 5770 a day and i was considering crossfiring with another, but the games ive played so far are preety good on it anyway and im thinking i wont crossfire untill i see a need to do it, at the mo at 1680x1050 i see no need on anything ive tried

I run CF 5770's @ 1920x1080 and they tear through everything, stonking setup, and considerably cheaper than the 5870's now. :)

Hex i have been considering this setup. Can you tell me what they are like in terms of noise/heat..also do you have any issues with the drivers and games not really supporting crossfire fully? oh and what powersupply are you using to run them..I currently have a hyper type R 580watt.

Skal.

No problems what so ever with drivers (and i'm using the old 8.66.06's atm until the 9.11 officials come out), all the games i've tried work fine with CF.

PSU wise I have Corsair 620W, which doesn't even break sweat, i've ran 2 x 4870's off of it before and they use considerably more power than the 5770's do.

Noise wise, they are silent at idle, and at load I can just about hear them pushing air.

I have also seen 5770's for around £115 making crossfire 5770's fantastic bang for buck.

Yup, I paid £116/each for my cards and at that price you can't knock 'em!

Very tempting I must say..at these prices around £100 cheaper than a 5870 and available..whereas the 5870 appears to not be available..and judging by back orders this will be the case for a long time yet.

Considering this myself, bout time I got back on the CrossFire wagon and 5850s are like hen's teeth atm.

I'm sorely tempted to get two and call it quits gfx wise until at least second gen dx11 hits. Will have to have a looksy at the reviews / performance figures. Quick scan around and it seems 5770 stocks are sketchy too, time for the price to be inflated then.

edit- one time when less length is good, thanks for that, sapce in my case is at a premium.

edit edt - 128bit bus? performance is good with it, but cosidering the rest of the card this seems a major bottleneck.... guess I should have kept my 4890 longer.

i couldnt resist ordering another 5770 today to go crossfire, figured the way the 58** series are heading in price i can see these might follow suit soon and would have been gutted to wait only to find a £40 increase, looking forward to two of these as am very impressed with one
