I sent my GTX 280 back to BFG for RMA they send me a GTX285 OCFU back. Its was in a plan box with bubble wrap no documentation. they included a letter saying "it is a OCFU even though the sticker on the fan says OC" I dont know how I can check this?

Also I checked DX to see what info it was showing.

It is saying Aprox total memory is 1776 MB.... Is this onboard card ram? or has it included somthing else? I am assuming its just 1024 + including something else.

So can I check with software to find out what the actual ram is and if it really is OCFU?

IM On win 7 64bit

Download GPU-Z. You may be able to check the serial number on the BFG website to get more info on the card.

thanks couldnt rememer the name of this utility :)

looking at it its just 1024mb strange how dx 11 is stating 1776mb

thars 1 question sorted. now for the ocfu

answered my own qustion Core Clock ocfu is 712MHz (vs. 648MHz standard )

I feel another RMA comming on.

well it's not a OCFU

http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgegtx2851024ocfube.aspx

The speeds would need to be 712 core, 1620 shader

And its not even an OC

http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgrgtx2852048oce.aspx

Core 666, shader 1476

It would appear from gpu that it's nothing?

Try loading up rivatuner or evga precision to check the core and shader speeds in case gpu-z is reporting it wrong.

What does your control panel in Nvidia say?

EDIT: BFG never did a stock speed 285 so it definitely could be a gpu-z fault.

Any Idea how to check on Rivatuer. I never used it.??

Nvidia monitor is saying 300mhz but that may just be its current state

Nvidia control panel shows...

On the basis that you were told you'd be getting a different card than you were sent, I would contact them to clear it up.

Maybe under the pretence of "I'd just like to clarify what card you've got me down as having in case I have issues with this".

Either way though, a GTX285 is faster than a 280, I wouldn't complain about it.

An OCFU is most probably not worth the hassle of sending it back and waiting for a replacement.

Can't see why anyone would complain about sending off a 280GTX OC and getting a vanilla 285GTX back (the shader clock on a stock 285 is probably quite a bit higher than most OC'd 280)... tho I do conceed them telling you it was an OCFU puts a slightly different perspective on it...

Personally I'd just clock it to OCFU speeds if it will take them - which it should - and save youself more hassle...

GTX280 and GTX285. ;)

Still though, I agree that this is nothing to complain about.

I dislike the useage infront of the number... its always been traditional for it to follow the number i.e. 9800GT, Volkswagen Golf GTI, etc. etc.

Despite that, it's not their name.

I'll start calling Windows 7, XP because that's the name of MS's longest running OS.

Doesn't quite equate to what I'm saying...

its like going Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, XP Windows.

Granted throwing the GeForce in there complicates things a bit.

probably but its not the point. although my 280 was OC this seems to be standard not even oc let alone ocfu like they said.

Then what is the point? If you want to complain about the confusion between the cards that's fine, but you can't RMA it as it is a better card. BFG have fulfilled their part.

I dislike the useage infront of the number.

Indeed, it's like saying I've got a Porsche RS GT3 997! :o

The X is actually there in this case to represent an unknown number, probably to avoid going into the 10,000s. Notice how ATI did a similar thing after the Radeon 9000 series.

I reckon Nvidia just want to avoid getting into a situation such as "Radeon X1950 XTX"

If they kept it as "X295 GT", you'd expect an "X295 GTX".

Well thanks for hijacking the thred with pointless crap about me complaining? when did I complain? dont jump on me like some of you do when hou think they in the wrong. I will get the thred closed. I already contacted them and they have agreed to replace it in a non complaining fasion. If some of you want to carry on about cars and complaining start a new thred. remember this is called " what is it..." Thank to the guys that did offer to help me by giving me advice.

The thing is they think they sent me a gtx 285 OCFU so if they are are putting the wrong labels on things better to get it sorted now so in the future other BFG RMAs might not have the same mistake.
