So the new version of Divx allows for this, providing you have Windows 7...

Anyone managed to get it working without fault? I did on my 360, but and for reasons unknown, it only plays a certain amount of MKV's ... But the ones it does work flawlessly.. Shame there's so much damn fan noise coming out of the 360 makes it completely worthless as a media extender..

So tried on the PS3, but not having so much luck.. Just comes back with a Media Center Error whenever i try to play an MKV...

Any suggestions why? Just really starting to dabble with streaming from my pc..

I have tried a few .mkv files onto my PS3 with PS3 Media Server (on Windows 7 RC), however it seems very unreliable in finding my PS3, and only seems to work if I uninstall everything and then reinstall, once I reboot my PC it no longer detects the PS3. :/

Although once it does work it works perfectly, just a shame it's so hit and miss.

I might have to try this new version of Divx with this support.

I've been using the Divx 7 for Windows 7. You can only use it through Media Center on the 360 and it is included as an optional install for the latest version of Divx.

I've not found the perfect format for it but I've tried a few free MKVs out there and most have worked, just the odd one for me that hasn't. Hopefully they'll have an update in the future to help compatability.

Just to note that this Divx version is actually transcoding the files so it uses the CPU on your PC to do so, although I've not noticed any problems with it and I'm sending the files down 200mbps powerline adapters.

The problem here is you may as well run a media PC under your TV than your main PC and console both eating power, but as a short term cheap solution it's looking good.

I use Tversity personally to do this :)

I found Tversity's performance on .mkv files to be appauling on my 360, the quality was terrible.

Now maybe the settings were wrong but I didn't tinker with it, switched on the PS3 got PSMS to work and it streamed a 720p file no problem.

DivX tech preview works fine for me, which is now part of the divx for win7 package. That's 360 though, so if yours is too loud not much use anyway. what difference is there in the contents of the mkv files that do/don't work?

I find PS3MS works great. BUT you need to start the PS3 and then start the program once the PS3 is in its menu. Otherwise it wont register. Even if it's started as a service i find opening another copy will make it work again. Really great program. Even watched a 1080p trailer yesterday without lag/problem

I got my xbox360 working without a problem, but I dont know how to make the ps3 work.

I can see the file and it just gives a data corrupted message when i try to play it. Grr. The xbox playback was great but media centre is such a crap piece of software on the xbox.

Has anyone got step by step instructions to let the ps3 use its own video management software and get the video streamed using the Divx HD preview and W7?

That's the thing I have tried this as well! Leave it until it's booted to the main menu with the XMB then load up PSMS, but NOTHING!

I wonder if it's because I am still on Windows 7 RC.

ps3 media server for me,

got my ps3 connected to my pc (ethernet) on a gig lan and it plays 1080p mkv's perfectly (10/100 lan didint.) Not had a file it wont play or transcode yet :D
