Got a holiday booked to Bansko on 30th January with 6 my mates for the week all doing boarding!

I have done skiing before and have everything except a jacket, which was previously a decathlon one around £70 that I left accidentally at Centre Parcs :(

Was thinking just about getting another one of them possibly this one as will be around £100 with my mates discount (works there)

just wondered if anyone else had any jackets that they would be able to recommend me or shops?

Thanks

thanks for the information that site looks good. Been told to have a look at tk max as you can get some deals on the boarding jackets there

You can but very helpfully TK max punch a great big hole through all their waterproofs when attaching their security tags.

I have got 2 where I live so will check both of them out:). Also would anyone reccomend looking into buying a boarding helmet as I hear you get some nasty bangs on head?? Or shall just like at hiring?

To my mind, it really doesn't matter whether you are beginner falling over all the time or have years of experience and ski off-piste through the forest; I would ALWAYS advise anyone to wear a good quality helmet.

In the interests of comfort as well as safety, I would advise buying, in the UK. Points to bear in mind:
  • if it is uncomfortable after five minutes, you will have a splitting headache by the end of the day
  • you are going to have a gap above your goggles - it will be freezing!
  • check the fit with whatever goggles or sunglasses you are going to wear
Incidentally, don't forget to take sun-tan lotion and never ski without goggles or sun-glasses and decent gloves.

Almost makes it seem like a holiday, doesn't it ;)

Thanks for that post! Will have to look getting a helmet then. Been skiing before just first time at boarding so have googles (bloc) and gloves but might look at investing in a better pair for Xmas aswell with some nice skin socks starting to add up

You could always hire a Jacket for the holiday, unless your planning to ski/Snowboard again after this holiday. You could probably hire a decent jacket for that price your intending to buy one, which will be much higher quality than the one you are thinking of buying. It's up to you, as long as the jacket will keep you warm and offer enough pockets and be resilient enough then it will be fine!

If you don't have a helmet then I definitely recommend getting one. Most important piece of kit you will take with you, from a safety point of view. For example take the late actress Natasha Richardson who died earlier this year when she was out on a skiing trip, she took a bang to the head and seemed fine because of lucid interval, later though died through bleeding to the brain. Don't take chances ;).

I always wear a helmet when playing in the snow park. Im going to try a normal bmx helmet this season because i usually get too hot in a helmet designed for snowboarding. The only problem might be getting the strap from my goggles to sit nicely over it, but im sure i can bodge up a guide for it or something.

This. I dont feel the cold so it doesnt really bother me. But the sun will get to it and you'll have a red stripe across your forehead for weeks :(

And
On January 5, 1998, Sonny Bono died from injuries sustained when he struck a tree while skiing on the Nevada side of Heavenly Ski Resort near South Lake Tahoe, California. (Wikipedia)

I will defiantely get a jacket as I also use if for when we go walking or camping etc and will be going skiing again. So my plan is to get a lightweight one that isn't made for warmth so i can use it other times. When I go boarding just usually where my thermal jacket or top.

Will looking into investing in a helmet then probably ask for it for Christmas or something.

Good point about the sun-tan lotion, the part that many people forget is to use it under the nose and under the chin/neck as they don't tend to think about the reflection on the snow.

I've never used a helmet myself but I'm sure they're a good idea.

lynchy6789: a few manufacturers that are worth looking out for if you can find them in your price range - Burton, Bonfire, Quiksilver, Westbeach and Special Blend. That's not to say that there aren't other decent options, there certainly are but buying from one of those brands is usually a good indicator of quality.

Thanks for that semi pro. Don't really know much about brands when it comes to skiing been talking to my cousin as i had a quicksilve jacket which he managed to get from Tk Max for £45 and he said its been great.

Any other brand helmets I need to look at?

Thanks for those Link Ben J having a look through them now.

No problem about the clothing but I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea about helmets, as I mentioned I don't wear one. If I had to guess anything that passes the relevant CE testing should be fine but hopefully someone else will be able to tell you properly.

I'm a burtons man, top quality snowgear, whether it be boards or clothing. But generally those websites I linked you to only sell quality skiing/boarding gear.

Ultimately, looks and fit are the first things to look for. Then the actual gadgets/features and quality should be looked at. You want to stay warm and have somthing with useful pockets e.t.c
