Yesterday I turned it on for three minutes, thinking the food was inside, only to discover when it finished that it wasn't - yes I am a spastic ;)

I've used it a couple of times since and it seems to work okay, but have I knackered it? Is it safe to use, or is it leaking microwaves into my brain or something :p

if it works i wouldnt worry.

suprised it didnt implode or something though, the odd time i forgot to put food in after 10 seconds there was always a wierd sound coming from the microwave like the structure was under a lot of stress

You could have overloaded the magnetron!!!

And the best thing is, that sentence is factually correct :p

I know they say you should always leave a glass of water inside just in case you accidentally switch it on when empty, but I've never done that. I'll be doing it from now on though... ;/

If the worst case scenario is it just doesn't work then that's okay, I was just concerned it might be a health hazard now.

Well if you wake up one morning and your brain is leaking out of your ears then we will know won't we.

Should matter all that much, it may not last as long but hardly that much differance. The only way to really kill a Microwave is to fill it with metal and put it on full whack.

It'll make a pretty impressive light show and make your hair stand on end for a month, oh and fry the microwave pretty nicely.

It's a ticking time bomb!

GET TO THE CHOPPER!

the odds that its leaking radiation are almost nil.

stop trying to worry the OP in all probability theres less than a 1% chance he will wake up and discover hes mutated and gained superpowers.

whats the worst that can happen? youll turn into microwave man and never get to enjoy properly cooked food again instead you will be cursed with the plastic /rubbery microwaved cack your already acustomed to

It won't leak radiation unless the metal casing has been compromised. The most vulnerable bit is usually the glass door, so inspect that for cracks/damage. It's rare, but sometimes the door can shatter under stress (happened to my parents).

I'd just keep an eye on it the next few times you use it, just to make sure it doesn't burn your house down!

Also check food is properly cooked, because as Rich_L says, you probably overloaded the magnetron!

Really? Does the % increase with how long you leave it on? Would it be better to be closer to it?

i dont know but i heard if you sleep with a mobile phone attacked to your head your might gain super hearing, the only side effectis all the voices might send you crazy

Yeah TBH I'm always a bit wary of being near a microwave when it's on, in case it leaks or the glass did shatter.
