Imaginary on your behalf I imagine?

These pretend fees you talk of don't exist for the majority of computer components.

Every release we've had in the UK has been the US Dollar price plus VAT.
really? guess I'm out of touch with computer component prices.... ignore me then :)

They exist in some areas, Dell for example make up their own prices for the UK, but that's dell being disgustingly greedy.

Individual components though, you don't get this same issue. :)

My 5870 easily does 1GHz at 1.25v, I've not tried higher but I'm sure it will ;)

I'm also sure a 1GHz 5870 will be faster than a 5850 at 1110Mhz core, because the model number is 20 higher ;)

True if your 5870 does 1110 core though ;)

Quite a few reviews have also passed comment that the 5850 in general clock higher than the 5870.

Actually shouldn't a 5870 at 1GHz be merely as fast as a 1110MHz 5850, assuming the memory clocks are the same, because the 5870 has 11% more shaders? :p

11% more shaders does not equal 11% more performance;). The clock per clock speed difference is only 5% in games. Since framerates increase linearly as you up the clock speed you only need a 5850 at 1050 to match a 5870 at 1000Mhz.

Which is why the 5870 is never worth the extra £100 or 33% more (at launch prices) for a 5% gain which might even be cancelled out by a higher overclock on the 5850.

I told you the list price was $599 weeks ago :D

Shame we don't get two dollars to the pound as it would only be £344.:(

Indeed, feel a bit ripped off now, I'll stick to nvidia next time as they at least don't release cards within a few months of each other.

I don't feel ripped off per say..

But at 100 pound more than the 5850, I feel ripped off that way, since the cards are ROP limited, ATI dropped the ball with the 5870.

Oh here we go again.

Everyone knows 5870s are rip offs, you didn't have to buy one.
I'm an ATI fanboy..
I did have a 5870 and a 5850.. But the 5850 never arrived, so got 3 SSD's instead.

They should have been launched the same time or with a six month gap, bascially AMD cards are only good for 2-3 months, while nvidia cards cost more but at least will last you six months to a year before they release the next performance parts.

Think I'll sell my card while I can get rid of it then wait for nvidia as I don't want massive dual gpu ****e.

Are those clocks final? As if they are then that's a little disappointing after the rumors that it would outperform two 5870s.

The 5970 is clocked less because of the amount of heat it produces and the nuclear power station required to provide the juice if you ran both cores at 5870 speeds. It will certainly be faster than a single 5870 but I'd guess only a 50% increase in performance not 100% increase

Pricing will make it or break it. Around £500 I think enthusiast will go for it. much more than that and i don't think they'll shift in large quantities. I'm sure OCUK will sell out though

I'm sorry what?
It'll use less power than a 4870x2 easy...

If it's clocked at 725mhz as reported then you're probably better off getting 2x 5870s and crossfiring them, not least because they might be using the 5870 GPU's that failed to make the grade for 850mhz until the yields improve.

I'm not exactly knowledgeable but i read somewhere that ATi were struggling with the TDP? (something to do with heat and power?) and that they had to downgrade the clocks to allow the 5970 to run on a reasonable capacity power supply and not get too hot.

My 5870 idles 31C, as opposed the 70C of my 4870x2, it also uses less power than a 4870.
Go figure.
