? I'm not sure what you mean, surely you're not suggesting they should sit on cards that are ready to ship and make money, just because nvidia's next gen is delayed ? that would just be daft.

Besides the 5970 is designed to take the performance crown unanimously, cos at the moment there are still people beating the "my GTX295 get 5fps more than the 5870" drum. The idea of releasing the 5970 is that ATI can say we are fastest, so ordinary joe's think I want an ATI card now and pop to the shops and get a 5750 and feel really happy they have the fastest GFX card in the world.

As for milking it, Christ knows they need to and why the hell not ?

Meh. People pay far to much attention to the average framerates, when comparing a GTX295 and a HD5870 folk should also look at the minimum framerates which 6 times out of 10 show a dual chip card have a much lower minimum framerate then a single GPU card.

This can be a royal pain in the back side when you playing driving games like GRID or Need for Speed Shift as the screen suddenly crawls along even though your doing 180mph then all of the sudden you get slingshot of acceleration just as you reach a bend. In other games it takes the form of stuttering which is an annoyance

fair comment, never thought about it that way.
i just thought it was it was a bit sudden to realease one model after another so quickly.

Lol, the 5870 beats the 295 hands down. It's got 90% the performance and no dual GPU issues, low power and DX11 is a bonus

strange definition of beating it hands down you have. :p i allways thought that 90% of the performance meant than it is SLOWER.

He means best case, there are still a lot of games that do not scale with dual GPU well, thus a single GPU will be better overall ;)

In some areas like it being Dx11 or lower power consumption then yes, I totally agree, but most bench marks I have seen put it close to the 295gtx in performance, as you say, 90% performance. ;) Though for one gpu it is very impressive and we already know just how good the nvidia 295gtx is so that makes the new ATI card doubly worthy of praise. Value for money, of course, as is fairly often the case with the red team and this makes the 5870 the winner.

I would have thought it was going to be more expensive than this??

The GPU's are clocked 125MHz lower than standard 5870's so they're probably using it to sell GPU's that didn't quite cut the mustard, it would be a waste to put chips with all stream processors fully intact into a 5850.

It is slower as I said, but not that much, and given it doesnt have the issues with multi GPU, uses lower power and has DX11 it is no contest.

Are you seriously saying if you had the choice between buying a 295 or a 5870 anyone would choose the 295 if they were the same price? At 5870 launch I could have bought a 295 for £5 cheaper, no thanks.

Don't get me wrong the 295 is a great card, just not quite as good as the 5870.

Single GPU the 5870 beats all right? wait till ATi brings out dual GPU and lets compare to 295 :).

Yes, there are MANY people on these very forums that would do that very thing.

Admittedly, they're nVidiots, but still there are people who would.

then we should wait until nvidia brings their next gen dx11 dual gpu so the comparison is fair. a current gen card beating a previous gen card is not sth to boast about.
