Visitors to Tarlton's Underwater World in Aukland , New Zealand were amazed to witness what appears to have been an emergency cesarean section performed by one shark on a pregnant female of the same species .
The female shark would probably have lost the 4 babies had she given birth at night as it is usual for them to be eaten by other sharks or stingray before staff can intervene to protect them.
The staff were unaware that the female was pregnant and said they had never heard of such a phenomena. One expert told reporters of the precision of the bite saying it had to be exact so as not to kill the mother or the babies.
