Chinese diners eat live fish

Weird thing is it was proved that fish can actually feel pain etc.
Yes. A fish can 'feel' 'pain' but does it have the brain to do anything other than react instinctively? That is, the pain reflex is obvious but is it anything more than that...?
I made a similar comment twice already. In a nutshell, it seems very unlikely that it is more than that due to the relatively simple complexity of a fishes neurology.

However the aversion to bodily damage manifests itself physically/neurologically in a fish, the chances are that their 'pain' is just as unpleasant as it is for us - otherwise there'd be no reason to try and avoid it.

I can't see the video from work, and I can't say I have much of a problem with things being eaten alive - however if they're doing it as a pure novelty, or for 'fun' rather than freshness, it's a bit grim.

As for a live fish being chopped up into sushi - well, how do you kill a fish otherwise? I daresay the thing you do when catching a fish to eat, where you stick a finger in its mouth and pull the head back isn't a particularly comfortable way to die, and no worse than a knife, right? Or did they not chop the head off first?

No, not at all. It is alleged to be a sense of discomfort rather than what we relate to as pain - as in, I feel discomforted when my hair gets wet in the rain, thus I try to avoid it (a silly example, but you get the idea).

Again, quantifying pain in fish is really an incredibly moot point. We should be aiming to avoid discomfort in the animals we kill for food within all reason.

TBH it's not like its somthing thats never been seen before I've seen people on TV eat live bugs, reptiles, crustations, molluscs & surprise surprise fish. Hell half of that **** reality show I'm a celebrity give my career a boost is these people eating live bugs and the idiots at home waching it laughing at their misfortune. I don't agree with it but these people have a right to live the way they want to in thier own country and it's not as if they forced people to watch the video.

Hmmmmm, whilst it didn't disturb me seeing it to start with the bit when it's moving and they take a chunk out of it disturbed me a little.

Although what is the difference from this and say eating a grub/bug on IACGMOH?

I'm by no means against eating meat but something really turns my stomach about eating something alive, it's disrespectful to the animal and unnecessary.

I think the poking and prodding is off. But I don't have a problem with eating live food and have done. It's not my favourite thing ever, but open to it. "Playing" with the live food/animal is unnecessary though.

The snake thing is irrelevant as although the bits are still moving the snake is dead and can't feel anything. The fish is a different matter.

I think it's time we nuked the Japs. As a race they're just to freakily weird to fit in with the rest of the world.

[edit]Dammit, my fault for trusting the token fat guy in the office. He told me this was Japs not Chinese. Doesn't work now.

the japs have made a fully working exoskeleton powered suit though!

Think of it a war with midget robo supermen, we'd be dooooomed!
