Hi All,

Well, after a few months of problem free motoring my XKR is playing up. I had the 60k service done about 5k miles ago (plugs etc) and it was running great but over the last 2 weeks the engine has started to sound "ticky".

Another problem, at medium/high speed when i corner (mostly cornering right) it makes a kind of scratchy noise (as if the brakes are being applied lightly) but - i dont think the brakes are being automatically applied as wheels are not getting hot.

Taking down Jag garage tomorrow for them to investigate. Hope it just tweaks not another major expense :(

Oh, its on a W plate and has the steel lined engine so not the Nikasil issue :)

Here's a pic to make my post less boring!

Finally got the quote back, £1680 for the repairs...

Timing chain tensioner damage (I think he said it was)
Front wheel barings
Front fog light (figured i might as well have it done while it was in).

16 hours work - got hourly rate down to £54 as i have purchased 2 Jags from them and have used them for last 3+ years.

Good lord, that brings back memories of my XJS. I got rid of it in the summer because it needed about £3000 of work. Wheel hub made a horrible vibrating sound at 70, warped discs, etc. etc.

Jags are sexy cars and I will always love them but they are a nightmare to run.

Piece of advice: There will be, somewhere in your town, or somewhere close by, a small garage specialising in Jaguars. It takes a few years of Jag ownership to hear about them, but if you can find one of these places they'll do quality work for much, much less than official dealers. There is a place in my town with a load of classic Jags always parked on the street, and these people have decades of experience.

Maybe not for this job, but it pays to find your local "Jag man". Parts will, of course, always be very expensive though.

Is that at a main dealer?

Not a main dealer, a Local Jag specialist garage. I have used them for years, the engineer is a good bloke.

I took it to a different Jag/BMW specialist garage once to have something simple done and car come back with little "problems". My uncle is a mechanic so does stuff like services and MOT but this is a bit too specialised a job.

I had to have the same work done on my last car actually (XJ8) but last time it was my fault, i was new to Jag ownership and i let it run low on oil and damaged the chain / tensioners etc. The bits were going arounf the oil i was lucky not to damage the valves!

Edit: I like the S2000.

Best,
Martin

Can more than share your pain mate, had a £960 service earlier in the week, that didnt include the brake change it needs, and it excludes the fact that i managed to repair my heater blower myself saving a couple of hundred quid :) Would have been a £2000+ service had i let them do the lot as i really should have done if i wasnt being tight about it.

When the Alfa was doing this is was just the shield behind the disk had bent really close to the disk. Pushed to back with a finger, been fine since.

This symptom can also be a wheel bearing.

Edit: LOL, skim read the thread, but missed his second post.

Bad financial position there matey :/ Rather unhealthy position to be in having a car which causes financially significant bills.

Indeed. The screenie does include the car repairs and a new system i bought from OCUK today (the AMD gamer was too good to pass up).

Thing is, i'm on a good salary and on a "normal" month i pay off £877 of debt. Had a bad run of luck with car and a few unforseen expenses so my damn credit card has climbed.

I'm working away so i'm paying rent + fuel of £725 a month at the moment, once im back home working thats another £500 a month ill be paying off debts.

I'm absolutely astounded you've just bought a new gaming rig whilst in 28k a debt, whether you're paying your debts off or not.

Really is a reflection on todays credit driven consumerist society.
