Q6600 still good chip

Long live the Q6600, Had mine at 3.4GHZ easily, back to stock now due to recent problems, will be back to 3.4GHZ and beyond (hopefully) by xmas

Hi,

For the 775 setup the Q6600 is a hard to beat processor for the price you can ge them for. :)

The only other option would be to move to a new 1156 or 1366 platform and its going to cost a bit.

GO Q6600 here,
my first was a fantastic chip, I had it up to 3.6-7GHz, (can't remember temps)
But then my mobo blew up and took the chip with it.
My new one reaches about 3.4 comfortably, but I haven't tried higher yet.
No point in upgrading to i7 yet... i7 would be the only route though, don't fancy i5.

is it 'worth' upgrading from a 3.2 6600 to a 4ghz i7? (includes upgrading to ddr3 6gig from 4gig i suppose)

Unless you are into lots of video encoding/decoding then no. My thoughts on this matter is that you're not going to see hardly any gain is performance in games. the badndwidth of the Q6600 is hardly being pushed, so I see no need for the i7. I've looked into it myself and discount it every time for this reason. Until games developers start upping the levels of their games and hardware, then this is unlikely to change.

I can't get mine past 3.5GHz no matter what I try. Sad really since it's a watercooled rig. Still damn good chip though.

The Q6600 is a realy good chip overclock like a dream only reason I went i7 I was looking to upgrade and was offered the i7 940 so cheap I could'nt say no, less than £200easiest overclocker I've ever had .

I just got one second hand, and coming from an E6750 it's given my PC a new lease of life. It can handle everything I throw at it now.

However, I'm having some problems with temperatures. On stock volts (VID 1.2125) it's getting to about 65 deg C on my NH-U12F cooler. If I add much more voltage it gets over 70 fairly quickly, which seems quite high considering the low VID. The idle is also around 40 at stock, which is too high. I've upped the frequency to 3.2 very easily on stock volts though, no real difference in temps.

There's plenty of cooling and airflow in the case, it's tidy, and I've re-mounted the cooler several times, though never had amazing temps from it tbh.

Perhaps it's time to move on to something meatier?

If a Corsair H50 can be had second hand for £40, is there much that can beat it? How about a TRUE and some push pull action?

What are you all using?

These new TRUE's that come with the fan are brilliant work well and are almost silent and I found some of the diamond thermal paste shaved a few c of the temps too

Keep your current cpu for another year at least and see what's around then if it then feels too slow. If it still does eveything fine then, keep it for another year. :)

The E8400 and i7 920s are both good contenders for Intel's best chip ever btw... ;) (Mine are brilliant).

It deserved it.
Clearly it is ludicrus to expect those temps on a standard heatsink.

Wind your neck back in.

No, it didn't. Is the thread title "Post Your Load Temps"? No, it isn't. Wind you're own neck in and if you have nothing constructive to add then don't say anything! Too much of this on this forum these days!

Anyway, i've had my Q6600 at 3.4 for the last 2 years. Keep thinking about an upgrade but my system is still quick enough, games smooth enough so see no reason to change. Money would probably be better spent on a new graphics card, would provide more of a boost to your frames than a new CPU.

Wow, chill mate. Load temps do give more important information. Idle temps can give an idea, but if the cooler then craps out at higher temps, the load is much more relevant.

I also see no reason to go higher than a Q6600 atm, money is better spent on a gfx card. As for future-proofing, we all know no such thing exists, it's just a justification to spend more or buy a new expensive rig when the old one was probably fine!

Lol! I'm chilled! It's PCZ that needs to take a long walk in a tranquil garden! :D

I agree, no real need for an upgrade from the cpu at the moment. My idle temps @3.4 are 39/38/36/35 and load temps on sfft's 71/70/68/68. Could probably be better if i wasn't too lazy to lap my TRUE and CPU.

I've never kept a CPU for as long as i have kept my Q6600, it's been rock solid since the day i got it. It should go down in history as one of Intel's greatest ever!

Definitely!

I'm running mine at 3.2Ghz in a Antec Fusion Remote HTPC Case so there can't be much air flow. So I think 3.2Ghz was great. I might just get a new case and graphics card if I upgrade as I could only just fit my 8800GT in this case.

Had my Q6600 since August 2008 (when I paid £100+VAT for it), replacing my E2180 on my Abit IP35, which I purchased November 2007.

This basic rig (plus an 8800GT) is still going strong now - and is only really struggling with GTA4 @ 1920x1080, where I'm on about 30% settings.

An amazing chip (as is the 8800GT, I think) and I have no idea when I'll feel the need to upgrade the CPU, the GFX might have an upgrade in the next few months if I have a bit of spare cash that doesn't go into a car)

Happy Chap, you were right about the temps I do apologise, benched PC just now and the max temp was way off just like your crystal ball told you god knows you must have used on to make such assumptions, it did in fact hit 45c FYI idle temp is 32c checked Abit guru and it had the same temps so I will go with what I can see and not with what you can’t see. But thank you for the input.
And a genuine Thanks to everyone for their post reply
So I think I will defiantly stay with Q6600 for some time, have got different graphic card than sig have got ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB not the best but working just fine for the moment
Cheers
Dean

I put 3.5ghz as its just under 3.6 wel its 3555

I havent used one but it sounds like one of those chips similar to the barton 2500 and now my X2 3800+ A 2ghz chip that i have been running at 2.8ghz for over 3 years. Had it at 3.1ghz for a bit but was a bit unstable.

Orthos takes it so 92c apparently but what the hell! This is running under arctic freezer 64 pro and 2gb GSkill HZ. 1T (280 x 10)

Ill stick my kneck out here and say that the q6600 is possibly the best cpu intel have ever made, had one at 3.8ghz on air, fantastic cpu.

I agree!

I've had mine for over two years now and although I fancy treating myself to an upgrade I really can't justify it whilst the chip still does everything I ask of it and more.
