Mininova deletes all illegal material

So possession of warez is the same as possession of illegal drugs now?

No, the analogy was in legal terms.

The process of facilitating or making easier the purchase of drugs is illegal, even if you do not actually supply the drugs yourself.

Likewise the process of facilitating or making easier copyright infringement (as per various judgements relating to both TPB and mininova) is also illegal, even if you do not actually supply the copyrighted content yourself. The google defense doesn't apply (as per the TPB and mininova verdicts) due to the way these sites have presented themselves as sources of these sorts of material, and shown zero interest in policing the material (mininova) or actively refused to police the material (TPB).

What does it mean that the PB tracker is gone, You can still download a torrent from PB and let uTorrent download the file without doing extra things
/noob mode off

Their tracker is offline though, the part of the site that tells torrent programs where they can find peers sharing the torrent. Its got to the stage with Peer Exchange and DHT though that if you were to delete all the trackers from your torrent it will still download quite happily.

Usenet is the way forward!

For the vast majority of torrent users Usenet isn't the answer, they're used to getting things for free for near on 10 years now (if not more), I don't think many of them will be entirely happy with paying a monthly charge for the same end effect.

Shame, but the whole affair rather reminds me of King Canute trying to push back the tide.

More people every day must be learning about file sharing due to the publicity these cases get, yet the RIAA et at STILL don't have a mechanism (think iTunes) to download films legally at a fair price / usage scenario.

I always laugh when I see and hear people downloading illegal content period.
I try to explain to them the law etc...
However once they put their fingers in their ears I just take a step back and realise thieving scum with no morals will simply never listen.

You can only hear about the most popular torrent sites. Yes Mininova is/was great (but this was a replacement for another site Nova or something i cant remember anymore). There is still The Pirate Bay (only time will tell for how much longer) but there are 100s of other smaller torrent sites, and mostly important private torrent sites such as Torrentleech etc. Most people moved over to ssl newsgroups (including myself).

Ahh, I almost forgot, all this effort just to download linux :P

Some people use these sites to download material they have no way of buying. TV shows in the states for example - I'm sure many people would gladly pay to watch them but the opportunity is not there.

This is the gap that needs to be filled in the market

TV is dead, they should air the shows online (for a fee) on the release day, through a managed download service

I will not use iTunes for this, as it's shocking

Full speed/content Usenet access can be had for around £40 a year. If you dont want to pay that, then tough luck :p

If I could get films and TV shows on demand, I'd be all over that like a rash on your genitals after a night with the local ****.

I'd also be broke but still... :D

It'd be like Steam, with Steam I buy a lot more games than I did before Steam was available.

I agree, but I'm not sure this is a realistic option while (a) free downloads are still commonplace with little consequence and (b) the current TV funding model is in place. Until the funding link between transmission and production is broken, this isn't likely to change.

Thank you for explaining, from the users point of view it still seems to work in the same way as before.

I certainly will not be paying a monthly fee to usenet or rapid****, i'm sure there will something else coming along

You're cute :D

I'm surprised Rapidshare aren't targetted more heavily by the authorities.
I guess most of the illegal downloads are running thru torrents so that's where their focus will be, if we would all be using Rapidshare, Usenet and Newsgroups they would put the hammer down on those.
