Windows 7 Vs Vista Vs XP - Gaming

Okay, I found quite a few graphics apps in XP and Vista couldn't be minimised and then restored correctly. Maybe it was down to the drivers / card I was using, but instead of restoring, they simply created a blank screen. Th eonly option then was to close the app through the task manager and restart it. That hasn't occurred since I installed Win 7

I think i know what you mean, one of the HL games was well known for that (may have been the first one actually, as it was years and years ago now :p), if you minimised it, you were buggered, as when you maximised it again, it was just a black screen, or it went straight to a black screen, one of the two, got fixed in a later driver.

I never had Vista, used XP till 7 came out, but must admit, its an absolute cracking OS, solid as a rock, ive had no crashes, nothing, and it runs games etc... perfect, not bad for right off the bat, as i didn't go XP till Service Pack 1 came out for it, as i think it was ***** till then. :)

I like Vista better than 7.

Wait, hear me out.

If you have good hardware, there is 0 noticable performance difference; and the UI is better in Vista. It takes so many clicks to ****ing do anything in 7 :S

Simple things like MSN being on your start bar constantly, because 7 doesn't put any apps in the tray also are irritating.

Can you explain this in more detail?

This is my task bar.

Most things can be solved by running the programs you want in the taskbar, in compatibility mode.... Or fixing taskbar related settings

yes yes, "why should i have to run things in the first place within compatibility mode"

just offering solutions :D

£80-175 and the hassle of reinstalling an OS to have the same is a legitimate reason to not change from a working OS.

Ain't broke? Change it anyway, mike wants more cash.
It's £70 and it offers performance improvements all round, from games to even browsing hard-drives. It's also optimised for SSDs with TRIM support, which will be important as prices drop and they become more mainstream. Sometimes it's worth paying a bit of money for a better product. I spend so much time on my PC it seems like a waste not to take full advantage of it.

Thank you so much, that was angering me to no end!

Running Windows Live in compatability mode fixes it. You would think they would have made such a flagship program work properly in the first place though!

But, for me, £45, the opportunity to switch from OEM to retail was too much to miss. Also, reinstalling stuff has not been too painful + its given me to clear out a load of stuff that I once installed but never use anymore! (N.b. my XP setup was probably 5 or 6 years old!)

really tempted to get 7 now; starting to get bored with xp; problem is I'd want to completely wipe hard drive and there's so much stuff i dont want to and cant afford to lose...
Could back up some of the programs on my external hdd i guess, but copying it straight over to a w7 system isn't going to be such a good idea right?

When I first installed win 7 64bit as another dual boot option (kept Xp 32 as well)

I did a lot of benches on the games I play , on both Xp 32 and win7 64

Result: Only ONE game ran faster under win 7 64bit (Dcs black shark)
EVERY other game ran faster smother under XP32.

I even tried disabling a lot of the bloat from win7 64 ( un-needed / un-used services etc) ,
but its just a sad fact the win7 64 has a lot more running
in the back ground than XP32 eg the wmplayer runs for no apparent reason in
the back ground ( I think its something to do with widget carp - which I dont use)

I mean , pull up your task mananger under xp , tick show processess from other users and count up what running in the process tab......
Now do the same under win7 , there is a hell of a lot more running , which
is what I assume is making stuff run slower than xp on the same hardware.

It depends on the individual program

I copied over from my xp to my win7 install , about 60% of my programs
and they ran without problem , some I had to export reg keys form xp and import them to win7.

ALL of my games run form my R drive , all I had to do to get them working under
win7 was to export reg settings from xp and import them to win7 , job done.

Np =)

if you look around, there are solutions to quite a few nagging problem users have with Windows 7.

Im sure if people ask, they will recieve some help :P

Major releases

Windows 3.11
Windows 95
Windows NT/XP
Windows 7

Everything else that has been in between was just fluff.

Really VERY impressed by Windows 7.

Windows 7 is not a major release, Windows Vista was, and is the reason Windows 7 has hit the ground running.

I like the graphs for the simple fact it shows Vista clearly isn't a dog for gamers.

Well I haven't opted for W7 simply because I shelled out out 200 sheets on Vista Ultimate and from a purely gaming angle, it just doesn't offer enough of a gain to warrant me shelling out again for W7 Ultimate.
