A four-year-old boy has been mauled to death by a 'pitbull type dog' while his grandmother was babysitting him.

The child, named locally as John Paul Massey, suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.
His grandmother Helen Foulkes, 63, battled in vain to protect the boy from the white-and-brown-coloured animal.

The incident happened at a house in Wavertree, Liverpool, in the early hours of this morning.

Mrs Foulkes suffered extensive bite wounds and was being treated in the Royal Liverpool Hospital where her injuries were described as "not life threatening".

Dog handlers and armed response officers attended the house at 12.24am. The animal was destroyed.
Today, the house where the tragedy took place had been sealed off.
Neighbours said the incident happened at the home of his grandmother, who was babysitting John Paul and his older brother.

The dog is thought to have belonged to the youngster's uncle, a serving soldier.

I found out about this early this afternoon, it was quite a shock personally, I know we are somewhat "used" to hearing such things.

It was only a few weeks ago I was talking about this kid though, as a few weeks ago, he used to live next door to me with his mum and brother.

I regularly heard him running around in the front squealing with glee at his brother who was playing football out side.

They were outside on a daily basis, the older brother even smashed the window above our front door with his football.

But anyway, I find this some what surreal as it was only a short while ago that I saw this kid running around live and well. :(

Talk of dog breeding and banned breeds being involved.
Reap what you sow will no doubt be mentoned at some stage.
Sad when a dog becomes violent, and kills a child, poor kid, only 4 years old.
Big dogs, small houses, bad idea, I've a very personal view on dogs, wonderful animals as they are, I don't think a dog should live inside a persons house, I think they should have a yard to run in, taken for walks and some form of outhouse, boiler house to sleep in. Creates a boundary in the dogs mind.

I agree, the biggest issue is the way people breed such dogs.

As soon as I heard about it from my mum, I thought that it was down to the breeding of fighting dogs.

Regardless of the breed, not bringing the dog up correctly as shown in history will end up in a miss tempered dog.

But has others have said, some breeds are prone to be fighting dogs regardless of breeding and as such, shouldn't be kept as pets.

Tragic, but if you will keep dogs that are particularly prone to ill temper, as is your average *****'s habit...

Yip.

Not so much the breed, though that doesnt help, but how the dogs are brought up. My lasses parents have a staffie, soft as clart, not a spot of bother but they have brung the thing up properly. In another persons hands it could be a killer. The lass would kill me for saying this but I personally believe that breeds more prone to violence should be banned from being bred in this country. Yes you can bring them up right, but for every dog brought up right one isnt which can lead to incidents such as this.

Sigh, so the owner was a solider, dogs are pack animals, so the dog probably saw a chance to get up the pecking order.

We see it time and time again.

It's not the animals fault. It's like that idiot in America who kept a chimp as a pet, which then proceeded to systematically rip apart her friends face, tearing her hands off in the process.

If you get a dog knowing that you can spend virtually zero time having it looked after properly then you shouldn't have pets at all. This horrific incident is 100% the owner/adult of the houses responsibility. Some people just don't understand or care that certain animals are not child friendly, and while dogs can be some of the best pets, and best friends, they are still animals at the end of the day and need to be treated as such. Especially Pitbull type dogs that tend to have very strong, powerful jaws. If I had kids I would never risk their safety by keeping an animal of this type in close proximity to them.

My mum feels terrible about it as well, the family also had their own bulldog from the uncle, and my mum said to the kid's mum "what are you thinking getting a bulldog? They're known for mauling kids."

The amount of dog stories I've heard lately, it's obviously a massive issue.

Especially people bringing up dogs to fight.

The report said the dog was still agitated afterwards when the police got there, and I've seen how some people bring up dogs, they beat them to work them up in to a frenzy, it's horrendous.

I hope the uncle gets punished for this, I'm quite surprised the daily mail have reported this so unbiased.

Exactly, it's like when a bear mauls some one and people go on a revenge hunt to "get it back".

I don't understand this mentality, the bear's doing its thing, they're acting on their instincts and shouldn't be punished themselves for it.

In the sake of this dog, I would agree with it being put down though, as it's more than likely a far better result than the dog to live in torment. You can see the torment in the faces of some of these animals who get beaten to frenzy them up, it's horrible and pretty saddening.

Are you sure you mean bulldog, as in the churchill dog, and don't mean a pitbull/staffy/american pitbull or cross breed?

RIP Little guy :(

BUT

"Merseyside Police said it had a report of dog breeding in February and was investigating why no action was taken. It said the lack of action was "contrary to policy".

So the police failed this boy. What the hell do they do for there pay?

Probably eating doughnuts, biscuits and tea or harassing the kids at the local shopping mall I expect.

Lets not forget the fact that a small child and a dangerous dog were allowed in the same area of the house at midnight. Police and social services didn't do that.

To be quite honest, I'm not entirely sure of what breed I mean, I just know the "look" of the dogs, and usually associate it with it being some sort of "staff" or "bulldog".

Staffs or Staffordshire bull terriers are still bull types no?

I know they look different (I've had a staff, but it was a very long time ago).

Of course. It's not the Police's fault, as I said in my first post it is the owners / caretakers of the dog. They allowed this to happen, the child and the animal are not to blame here.

You can blame the police and the SS but you have to blame the childs parents and grandparents and uncle first, I mean they must have known how bad the dog was, I bet they come out with "he wouldn't hurt a fly".

I genuinely don't believe it to be a fault of the police's.

The family really shouldn't have allowed such a dog to be around such a small child, he was absolutely tiny.

Sounds like the uncle isn't even living there currently, it said something about him serving in the army currently.

Question 1) Why was the 4 year old child not in bed in a secure bedroom at midnight?
Question 2) How did the dog get access to the child?
Question 3) Why was an illegal dog ( pit pull or type ) not reported on a regular basis by neighbours?

Answers:- 1) Liverpool. (they're nearly all scally scum)
2) Who knows?
3) Because scally scum breed illegal dogs to sell and also to look big/cool.

Total answer: stop ****s being able to breed or have dogs!
