hi all,

I'm in a real mess here :(

Had a PC with high CPU temps so I checked the cpu, cleaned it with akasa cleaner (from ocuk incidentally) and applied the paste.

Stuck the HS down and booted the PC up and the monitor was blank, no leds came up on the keyboard neither.

This has happened to me before and that time i had applied too much paste. So I thought the same had happened here. Cleaned the HS again and applied the paste again.

Tried again, no avail. Repeated the steps and now I dont know how but no matter how much I clean the chip the writing has disappeared. Maybe its from rubbing it too hard/too much but the main problem is I've cleaned both the HS and the Chip as much as I can and I cannot get the monitor to come on, nor the leds on the keyboard.

What can I do??

Double check all electrical connections on the motherboard, check all components are firmly inplace and the Heatsink for the cpu.

This may help, try doing a CMOS reset, this has sometimes worked for me.

Thanks for the help but I've ensured all connections are ok. By CMOS reset do you mean taking the battery out ? If so I've done that - but perhaps not correctly. I simply took it out for about 15 seconds and put it back in. Should I leave it longer? And does the power lead have to be in the PSU whilst you do this ?

Heres my guess, cleaner/paste has run around the CPU onto the backside, remove the CPU from the socket, clean and replace, also check for paste on the pins (which will be virtually impossible to remove) In future the best way of cleaning off old paste is to remove the CPU.
