Buying car battery online?

Hi all,

I've bought bike batteries online before as it often works out to be considerably cheaper.

I have no idea how much car batteries should cost, or how much someone like halfrauds or kwikfit would charge. Is there little point in shopping for one and just go to one of these placeS?

It's not uber urgent but starting my car this morning I could tell the battery is starting to lose it's will to live (it's 7 years old!).

If it's not worthwhile I'll just pop into one of those shops on the way home, just don't fancy paying over the odds for some lead.

Cheers.

Oh yes I forgot to mention, it's an Alfa - it's basically breaking down, and dying, I'm thinking of scrapping it as it'll be too prohibitive... etc... is that about right?! ;) :p

I last got a battery from my local motor factors. I went in on a week day afternoon and they charged me trade price without me asking even though I paid with credit card. It was about 15% cheaper then Halfords.

They were also really good when it turned out to be the wrong battery, changed it without any questions and refunded me the difference.

Halfrauds wanted £105 for a battery for my skyline. Went to my local shop he said yeah np £45...asked how much to fit he said £2 gave him a 50 happy days :)

For normal car batteries (not the stupidly light gel one on the Westfield) I've used www.barden-ukshop.com before as I needed a specific Varta Silver Dynamic model (needed high CCA in a small dimension). Though looking at their website now they also do the Odyssey fancy gel light-weight ones too.

HTH

Batteries are about as expensive as I've ever seen them at the moment. Don't be too shocked at the prices is what I'm trying to say, I think :D

Ring a local battery specialist. They'll come close enough as to make it not worth bothering buying online :)

I'm starting to think that's the best way to go. I just don't want to pay £100 when you can buy the battery for less than 1/2 of that!

Just thought I'd see if it was sensible to go the online route. :)

Apparently dropping an asprin in each cell gives a dead battery a bit more life, if the car won't start in about half an hour when I'm going up to the Lakes I'm so trying this.
