Would this be a decent gaming pc?

Processor - AMD phenom II x4 965 black edition
Motherboard - Asus M4A79T Deluxe
Graphics card - XFX ATI Radeon 5850 HD 1GB GDDR5
RAM - Corsair twin2X4096 (2x 2GB)
Power supply - OCZ StealthXStream 600W
DVD drive - Liteon 22x DVDRW
Hard drive: Seagate 500 GB Barracuda 7200 (7200 RPM, SATA, 16 Mb cache)
Case - Havnt decided yet (suggestions would be appreciated)
O/s - Win 7 64-bit probably

Suggestions on improving or changing something are greatly appreciated, thanks :)

The maximum i'd want to spend is about £850

Yes!

Two points i would make:

Although I'd suggest a 3rd party CPU cooler so you can overclock that thing (it's what phenoms are for after all :D).

Also, with all of the issues with stock you're unlikely to get your 5850 any time soon..:( Seems the best way to go at the moment is 2 5770s in crossfire. Good performance, and most importantly, they're actually being distributed :p

Definitely looks like a good gaming spec to me :) I'd give i5 a thought though as well before you press the buy button though. Also for the hard drive id go for a Samsung F3 drive rather than that- very good hdd. For the case the new fractal design cases look good and my Lancool is spot on, depends on how much you want to budget for the case though. For the gpu you might want to xfire a couple of 5770s as the stock for the 58xx series is in very short supply.

Just had another look for you mate, and the i5 is very possible within your budget

(doesnt include OS though, but should be able to shave a few quid of of this spec)

Thanks for the replys so far guys :) I probably wont have the money until feb '10 so hopefully there might be more stock by then ;P

btw, this is my first build but my uncle who does this stuff a lot is gonna help, but because its my first build thats why im being abit cautious heh :P

Don't worry too much :p you've got our help for what to buy and your uncles help for the building. Building a pc is just like playing with expensive lego.

In fairness they're quite close when it comes to gaming, but the i5 also offers excellent overclocking potential and on-chip controllers for PCI-E etc. It also seems to perform better in more general tests (antivirus, encoding etc)

That i5 spec alex has spec'd looks a solid build and 2 5770s will be equalling the highly elusive 58xx series cards. I think the i5 will do a slightly better job in crossfire than the 965 from what benchmarks i've seen as well. Also don't worry about it being your first build as these forums are great for helping to put your new lego set together :) my first builds in my spec lol

I think 'Alex75's build is really brilliant. Only thing I would maybe change is the WD black Hard drive to a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB. Fastest non-ssd on the market.

I think i'll probably go with Alex's suggested setup, might look at some other graphics cards - not sure atm. will the suggested set-up be good enough to play most games at highest settings (and the more graphically demanding ones at medium settings) (taking into account i'll probably overclock the cpu) ?
