90gig?

BT Option 3 "unlimited" has an email warning at 80gig and soft limit of 100gig at which point you get an email saying your will be throttled for 30 days.

In actual fact tho (even taking into account they combine up and down bandwidth in the total) you will get the warning after using ~40-50gig and be throttled from that point onwards, and get the 100gig email when you've used about 60-70gig.

Closest you will get to truly unlimited - and even they aren't truly:

be - if you have an LLU enabled exchange - tho if your using more than 500gig a month they might get onto you - but people regularly use 300-500gig no hassle.

zen - have an "unlimited" package for ~£79/m with a soft limit at 1TB for the non LLU version.

Everyone else AFAIK have a fairuseage policy at around 50-100gig or will just throttle without warning after using a random amount, or have a 300gig allowance but a pitiful 3-4gig peak time which is soon used up and charge per gig for peak time after that.

If you are in a Virgin Media area, get cable.
Unlimited overnight, there are morning and afternoon limits, but they are generous, and even when you go over them your throttled speeds are still pretty good and you are only throttled for a few hours.

20Mb service allows you 7.5GB in the mornings (10:00-15:00), unlimited for an hour, then another 3GB from 16:00 - 21:00.

Thats something like a potential 1.7TB a month if you manage your time properly and even when limited, 5Mb/s isn't hard to live with.

Yea my mate was telling the same. He's on the BT Unlimited option and received a letter for going through 90GB in less than a month.

Truly Terrible.

LLU providers are going to be your best bet, follow the advice in the sticky and see who covers your exchange.

Be/O2 LLU is one of the better options out there, Sky are also fairly decent on their LLU packages but you'll need Sky TV.

Maybe worth checking some of the providers like ADSL24 and other "Enta" resellers to see if the LLU packages they offer are available too, C&W seem to have a good rep at the moment and they resell that service.

If you can't get LLU then you're stuck with BTW providers which for your usage of say 100Gb a month is going to cost you a lot more than your "premium" of £25.

on option 3 myself and am a very heavy user with torrents and rapidshare and never had an email ;)

do they charge you extra for going over 100gb? tbh our exchange is wholely owned by bt wholesell there is no llu operators extra but virgin is offering unlimited 8 to 9 m speeds which is as good as i get not living in a city has its drawbacks i suppose!

Sky Broadband Max. Only package with no FUP and throttling.

However, the likes of o2/be wouldn't bat an eyelid at 90gig a month and never throttle.

BT is terrible.

If I had warning after 90gig I'd be fuming. I download between 275-350GB/month and upload around 140-150gb/month

i am fuming tbh as i said 4 computer users and 2 console and there bloody bt vision serivce and they throttle me between 5pm and 12 pm
when i took this service out there was no FUP so i am going to call them tommorow and create hell i just got a new harddrive and had to redownload over 10 steam games and all my other programs ! i wondered why it took me 2 days to download dirt2 on steam .

i am under contract with bt till april apparently , but can i get out of it earlier ? i am livid atm

Doubt you will be able to get out - you'd have had to have complained within a limited time after a change in the agreement to break the contract.

We are quite heavy users here - I just DL'd MW2 on steam (~12gig), use iTunes, iPlayer, etc. and quite a few of us sharing... we use around 80-100gig a month - I don't have much sympathy for people using more than 150gig or so a month, paying £20-30 and complaining - its a residential connection and not intended for heavy use 24x7 ffs... if you were paying £60+/m then I could understand it.

BT clearly states there is a Fair Use Policy attached and that you can be limited to preserve the broadband experience for other users.

I agree BT shouldn't really call it Unlimited [though according to their site you don't get charged for going over the magic line, just have your speed throttled until you stop].

Either way, you're the one to blame for not reading the small print.

All ISPs have a fair use policy, even unlimited ones like Virgin and Sky. Some don't enforce it, but they probably will do eventually.

I understand why bt have that 80/90/100 cap but untill someone actually take them to court over the "unlimited" advertising they, and most other isps, will continue to use it.

Being fair, 90gb really is a joke these days. With browsing, afew downloads, hd tv (iplyer/whatever), games, steam, patches, youtube etc is very realistic of a family of 4 to hit 5-600gb a month.Talktalk is possibly the worst isp out there but even their fup on their top package is 500gb. I should point out, for the unsympathetic/d-grade mathematicians , that a line synced at 24m will hit 150gb in ~16 hours, not exactly 24/7. A more realistic 10-12m (which most people get) is 30 (30/30=1 hour per day). I don't want to know how much data you can shift on a 50m virgin line but even that, globally speaking, isn't that quick.

The simple fact of the matter is bts infrastructure is many years behind the rest of Europe but our usage is not and people are starting to realise that.

my parents are on BT OPT 3 they do throttle quite baddly, not noticed it after 5 but they do late at night for a silly reason, than it comes back again after 12
