I've been round all the usual comparison sites, the Elephant Group of sites, Direct Line.

Are there any hidden gems which you know of, or any I have missed?

Is it worth going to a broker?

Any experience with insurance from the car dealer in cases of being a young'un?

EDIT: This thread turned into a "Why Hatter shouldn't get a new car" and then back into an "Insurance" thread. The former point has been covered, so please reply in the context of the latter ;)

Elephant and friends seem to be the best.

It's all relative though, whats a high performance luxury car? If its a Mercedes S65 AMG then you might be in for a dissapointment.

No insurance from a car dealer is going to be any use.

Chris Knott, Noel Dazley, Sky, Adrian Flux.

Depends entirely on the policy holder and car however, for example Fox lives in the Sandringham estate so can insure a 997 GT2 for £35.78 and I live in Beirut so it would cost over £3500 to fully comp a Golf GTi.

Admiral been cheapest for me so far (£600 on MR2). My next car, Lotus Elise R, is coming in at £700-1000, changing almost daily with Admiral.

(25yr old;IAM license 1yr).

Yeah, should have specified. 330i, S5, M3.

Thanks for the names, will check them out.

Admiral always comes out very cheap for me. No idea why!

Having said that, i'm currently with Churchill after a surprisingly good quote!

To be honest if you've got the £30,000+ it will cost you to buy an S5 does it really matter whether the insurance is a couple of grand?

And why Audi S5 or 330i? Surely the 335i is a better match?

Or is this yet another 'I am a dreamer I want a fast car I know nothing about them lets pluck some out of thin air' thread?

The quotes I have been receiving have been around £4-5k (and plenty of "No, we won't insure you"), and yes - spending that sort of money does matter to me, as I would happily wait a year if it meant the difference between saving £2-3k and not.

Why would I happily wait for that saving? Because I am not an idiot.

I do not want the 335i - it handles differently, the power delivery is different. As far as my choice goes, the S5 is the least likely contender, but this isn't what the thread is about.

No, why would I be asking about the insurance if of fantasy cars if I (A) Knew nothing about the cars and (B) If I was just dreaming?

335i handles differently to a 330i?!

Power delivery, sure, but handles different? What? The weights are very similar, suspension is identical, chassis identical.. they are the same car with a different engine?

IIRC they may be steering differences but if there are then its that the 335i has hydraulic PAS whereas the 330i has inferior (less feel) electric PAS?

It's not even like the difference between, say, a 530i and a 540i where the latter has much more weight over the front?

Some enthusiasts prefer the power delivery style of the 330i over the twin turbo 335i which is fair enough but thats a taste they've developed over time, it doesnt seem like you have that much experience of this sort of car if you can't even insure one

Depends how 'young' a 'young driver' you are but I suspect your best bet is to add parents as named drivers on a policy with somebody like Admiral. This is your best shot at reasonable insurance on this sort of car.

Handles and feeds different, yes. I suspected that the handling difference I felt at the front was due to the engine difference. The 335i's N54 is a good 30KG heavier than the N52(?) in the 330i.

Whatever the paper differences, the 335i felt 'heavier' in steering and lumpier in its power delivery than the 330i, and I preferred the latter.

Yes the steering is heavier - because it's a proper steering system. An M3 won't have steering thats any lighter! BMW Hydraulic PAS is quite heavy but to many thats the appeal - it has more feel. The electric PAS is lighter with less feel.

I appreciate I may have come across quite harshly but your list reads like somebodies fantasy on paper which saloon list. I cant see a serious M3 buyer being interested in a 330i and a serious 330i buyer is normally a 330i buyer because the M3, for whatever reason (Normally cost but sometimes other things) doesnt suit.

I am guessing you have limited ownership experience of these sorts of cars which means you'd probably get plenty of enjoyment from a 330i without the additional expense, hassle and older carness (is that a word? lol) of the M3.

I agree with you, but you asked for the 'range' I was looking at, and the range (based on insurance prices I have been pulling for the cars I am interested in, lowest to highest) started with 330i and ended with M3, with an S5 in the middle.

(PS: carness - perhaps pedigree?)

Bell direct i found cheapish for me!

was 21 and had a 2003 subaru impreza wrx ppp, and it cost me £1100 for a year! which i thought was good back then :)

Try the admiral group: Bell, Elephant & Admiral

Also try Aviva who I'm with atm. When they ask how long you've had your driving licence they count your provisional and full licence where as other companies only count the time you've had your full licence.

Ive insured quite a few warmish cars in my low 20s and find its admiral or bell that gives me the cheapest quotes

:)

Insurance companies are nutty. £600 per year extra when I say I will "garage" a brand new car as opposed to parking it on a street.

Thank you for all your suggestions so far

None of those are luxury cars, but nevertheless, Admiral group (Elephant, Diamond, Bell, Admiral) have always been by FAR the best for me.
