Best 'practical' fun sportscar for 25k or less

Myself, i'm picking up a Lotus next month as my only car

You'll be surprised just how impractical the Elise is, not easy to live with as an only car. The boot is all but useless, there's no glovebox or door pockets which means that you can't keep *anything* inside the car.

Oh another thing, most have rear seats, but not all do.

they do as standard. only if people have removed them i would have thought. it wasn't an option not to have them. plus they are very lightweight, made out of plastic and not much else.

as well as being noisier, the suspension is much harder and the bucket seats, although comfy, are not the same as the the standard M3. likewise the cabin isn't sparse in a CSL, but not the same cruiser / feel as regular M3.

I remember Gibbo saying there are like night and day apart to drive, though.

I don't agree that they are night and day, the differences are small and subtle but the induction noise of the CSL does make it sound much much nicer and sharper. To drive the CSL is sharper and lighter and feels it but the basic characteristics are pretty much the same.

Well, it was a choice between a new Elise, old Porker (911 or Cayman at a push), old Beemer Z4M (which are difficult to come by as coupes) or a very long wait for the Toyota FT-HS Celica/Supra.

As i've never owned a car from new the Elise won. Besides all I keep in the car is one of those Victorinox Rescue Tools ;)

How the hell did I forget the seats! These are very much a love hate thing, never liked the CSL seats but loved the GT3 buckets which wrapped you better and always felt lower.

You'll love it, they're fantastic cars but you may get tired of not being able to use it for anything other than drive. You can't go shopping (especially with a girl!), can't go to B&Q, can't use it to go to the airport (suitcase in the boot? don't make me laugh!) etc.

Enjoy it though, those Summer days blasting around the countryside will be amazing. I still have fond memories of some amazing drives.

Ah crap, no B&Q?!

I would go for an M3 if a decent one fell in my budget range and was local to me ;)

I love the CSL seats, they fit me perfectly actually felt very very similar to the 968CS seats, which are equally fantastic.

Plenty of replies it seems !

I'm a little bemused why 350z's and 370z's are being even considered when people are suggesting M3 CSL's, NSX's and 911s. The 1 series diesel actually made me die a little inside.

Having acceptance for a high 0-60 is something you need to do with the s2000, its fast 30 and above really, however 0-60 in 5.6 seems to be very repeatable.

Its probably a little unfair, as I've had quite a bit of handling work done to my s2k, and maybe im being rose tinted but I genuinely cant comprehend why people consider the 350/370's to be remotely close in the fun and or handlign terms.. they are GT cruisers....right?

I fail to see it going it in 5.5 An MR2 Turbo does it in 5.3ish and thats MR.

You really have to kill it and launch at 7000rpm to get it, but it is possible.

The S2000 may not be MR but the the driver is sat on the back wheels, it's also lighter than an MR2

7000RPM launch!! Wow, you'd have balls to do that to you're own car! 245 rears do cope well with fast launches off the line though.

So... has there been any consensus for the OP (or OP's shortlist?) I'm roughly in the same boat as I can pull out of the Elise if the right car dawned on me ;)
