Why all this talk of Audi S4's?! The guy is being forced to give up his Vectra because it's too expensive to run, so how an earth is a twin turbo, ten year old performance Audi which is liable to explode at any moment possibly a good idea?

Just get a diesel powered mass market box and be done with it.

he could stay with vauxhall and get an omega v6

this one even comes with irmscher tat

if you're going to get a 1.8 mondeo then you're not going to spend £5k
i think getting something slow and cheap is just extreme.

Nothing wrong with the Omega, infact one of the best cars Vauxhall have ever made. Avoid the autos though, the old man's went about 100~k and was in the region of 1k to fix (doing the labour himself). To be fair he only really used it to tow the caravan. Pretty quick for such a big car though.

Ideal car for you. Cheapish to run and not super fast because lets face it the next thing that was going to happen with the way you drove that Vectra was a huge crash anyway :p

I've had the car just over 16 months and not had so much as a near miss.

You dont go 16 months without so much as near miss driving like that all the time. Yes we had a bit of fun at the rolling road, but at the north york moors convoy i spent my whole time at the back of the convoy driving nice and sensibly.

I did one or two passenger rides and that was it.

Rest of the time i just enjoy driving it, just in hindsight not sympathetically to the clutch with the constant dumping of the clutch to feel just how hard it could pull away from a roundabout.

If im going to do boring and econobox, anybody know of a saloon for under 10k with good iphone support ? or at least one that looks good with an aftermarket head unit fitted. That way if im driving slowly and sensibly at least ive got my tunes !

A mate of mines girl done this once, turned round and told him to get rid of his bike or shes leaving him, he went the opposite to you though and told her to leave her keys on the way out and finished with her.

On the other hand its an excuse to get something different, could always go out and blow some cash on a twin turbo supra or something :p

thing is its not all one sided. Ive been honest about how this is effecting others than me. We can afford it, but to the detriment of other things that she (and probably most other non petrolheads) would consider more important.

That is SERIOUS value for money right there.

I'm in humble opinion, something like that is ideal for the OP. It has a fair wedge of power, has a good specification and plenty of practically for not much more than the clutch cost on the VXR. If it turns out to be a pup it is cheap enough to throw away on eBay for a few hundred quid when a big bill pops up, and I'd argue that with RWD and (apparently) more power than the ST220, it will be more fun to drive than the Mondeo which is a good few thousand pounds more.

To be honest the answer is none of these cars. It obviously isnt practical under his circumstances.

Get a Mondeo/Vectra diesel with a bodykit and be done with it.

Fox is talking brutal sense here, my usual style. :D

I can't believe you were even thinking of a vr4 Galant.
GET A GRIP.
Your current car is newish and will not cause you any more trouble if you replace the clutch (and not a £800 one either) and drive it sensibly.
It's got nothing to do with trying to cut costs, you just want a new car but have no money but you're trying to find some way of justifying it. (Mainly to keep your missus happy I agree, but we all know they have got a wheel nut loose when it comes to cars) :p

Either buy something economical, affordable and reliable .. OR DON'T
Stop looking at old ****ters with turbos. :D

i looked at how much one cost to run.

Ive never looked before so no idea. Pardon me for not knowing everything in the world and having to look it up.

More than some would have done.
