Bands that you can't understand why they're popular/famous?

Rolling Stones. Ugly guy that couldn't sing found ugly guys that couldn't play. And they keep doing that act to full stadiums around the world for half a century. It's a mystery to me.

So you can listen to Gimme Shelter and not get why people might like them?

In regards to The Resistance, the songs are pants compared to old Muse (apart from Exogenesis).

They don't have the "spark" to say New Born, Hysteria, Citizen Erased and so on, BUT they are not bad songs. In fact some of them are truly amazing, Unnatural Selection and Uprising being perfect examples.

If you listen to The Resistance, it all just makes sense, everything fits together.
The track listing is just spot on!

/Muse fan boy out

EDIT Is Citizen Erased one of the finest songs ever made?

Had a look at the top 40 for some suggestions... :o

you really cant understand why those are famous ?

well ill help you out. its becase they are rammed down the throat of the zombie public at every opportunity using tv/radio and any other media. huge advertising/promotion budgets and huge amounts of sheep willing to buy what they are told

Why are people defending their fave bands in this thread?
At least 4 of my favourites have been mentioned and I can understand why people can't see why they became popular.

People seem to be just posting bands that they don't like, which sort of misses the point. I hate RHCP but can at least understand the mass appeal.

Anyway, bands that I can't understand why they're popular:

Nickelback
Tenacious D

Nickelback are a solid rock group, honestly they have some great tunes, Never Again and Animals spring to mind. However I do hate those Reminds Me and Rockstar songs.

I can definitely see why they've done so well, they're the definition of a typical, straight forward American (fine, Canadian) rock group.

Just guessing, but I suppose the comedy aspect has a lot to do with Tenacious D's appeal, (**** Her Gently is genius!) but aside from that they also have that Jack Black guy who is, like, a massive movie star...

Glad I could explain.

When you say, "massive", do you mean as in well known and popular or overweight? Or both? :p

Yup. Stone's gimme shelter is badly belched out, very badly recorded and you can actually hear the band going off sync at various levels, several times in studio version and Mary Clayton runs out of breath during her parts. The only good thing about it, in terms of Rolling Stones involvement, is that it is semi decent riff (although very simple - whole song is based on two chords progression, with third "borrowed" chord thrown in for balance, repeated over and over) plus it created fantastic cover opportunity for The Sisters Of Mercy.

Just put a few quotes together

Jamie Cullum
Robbie Williams
Mariah Carey
Madonna
Macy Gray
Lil Wayne
50Cent
Cheryl Cole
Pixie Lott
Dannii Minogue
Eminem
Pink

I know what you mean, I also can't understand why those bands are famous.

Echo & The Bunnymen
Razorlight
QOTSA

None of them have any kind of 'hook' for me. There are worse bands, but they usually have something about them that makes me understand why they are popular (fit birds, tv spin-offs, publicity/controversy, one good song etc)

Morbid Angel anyone? Don't get me wrong Altars of Madness is good, but their other stuff just seems weak... I feel I'll get lynched for that though :D

Nickleback
Effervescence (or whatever their called)

I appreciate that people have different music tastes, but the above are shocking!

With other bands, I can see who would like them.

Ie,

Slipknot - liked by mental people
Girls Allowed - liked by teenage girls etc
HIM - liked by semi goths

etc etc

These are massive stereotypes. I can't see who or why anyone would like the two bands I mentioned
