A friend of mine asked about the Audi A2 last night. Have to say that I didn't know much about it apart from the fact that they were overpriced when new, but made with a clever aluminium body.

Had a quick scan this morning. Kerb weight just under a ton, now that does impress me as it's probably as spacious as say a Focus (that's a guess). Over 60mpg (claimed) and that's without stop start tech. Hmm, looks interesting.

Can anyone add anything to that? Anyone driven or owned one?

Opinion from an actual previous owner:

Very competant cars, and you will get close to the 60mpg, I saw around 45s in the petrol, parents diesel saw 55s, nonsense about the motorway, they are perfectly fine at motorway speeds. I would go for the diesel or the 1.6 fsi if I was you though, I had the 1.4 petrol parents the 1.4 diesel. The 1.6 was faster and has close to the same mpg as the 1.4.

I looked into one for the Mrs and word on the street was avoid.

Although this was at £5k budget, newer could be a different story.

We have one and it is very nice to drive, but yes it is unreliable. There was a big problem with the indicators where they just stopped working, there have been never ending warning lights on the dash for the emissions (even though there was nothing wrong with it). The radio antenna isnt working, the boot leaks a lot!.. Where the spare wheel is kept there is a lot of water.

We have owned ours since new and only has 33,000 miles on it. We wouldnt buy another one lol.

My mum had one of these... kept going wrong since she got it.

I hated the thing, it was horrible at motorway speeds, and youd have to avoid a route with speedbumps, as no matter what speed you seem to hit them it would nearly break your spine.. it really couldnt manage bumps well at all.

In my opinion; avoid.

Thanks for the feedback chaps.
So, general consensus is unreliable, dog slow and with a harsh ride. Nice job by Skoda...sorry Audi.

Avoid the petrol models, they break all the time. The diesels are ace, esp if you get it chipped :) Had a few, and currently have had a 1.4tdi for a couple of years.

Not had ONE reliability issue with it.

Have had audi's of all shapes and sizes from A4 Avants to full blown A6 allroads. The A2 has been the most reliable, economical and generally excellent one of all.

Easily 55-60mpg, low CO2 emmisions mean cheap £35 road tax and insurance is minimal. Car will easily sit at 80-90 speeds on the motorway without breaking a sweat.

Reccomendations:
1. Get the 1.4Tdi
2. Get leather
3. Get as many mod-cons such as the glass roof and satnav etc.

No personal experience of these, but for a Fiesta sized hatch, is there any other car that looks as funky as the A2 and with Audi interior to boot as welll? Bit of a harsh ride quality on these apparently though.

Have a look on a2oc.net

For £2.5k, I'd be tempted to take a punt. You can always get rid of it if you don't like it.
