a 123d coupe with all the performance options ticked is actaully pretty damn good

Isn't it pretty much impossible to buy a 135i - new they cost stupid amounts, so no one bought them, so you can't find one second hand for a decent price?

That pretty much goes for nearly all the high capacity BMWs these days, everyone wants a x20d.

There seem to be plenty of x30i's and x30d's about (not as many as x20d's) but it actually seems impossible to find a good, fairly priced 135i. Even the 335i is slowly starting to come down to a reasonable price.

I think that the problem was that for a mediocrely specc'd NEW 135i/335i you could get a really nice alternative car - Lotus Exige, Porsche Cayman, Boxster, WRX, Evo. Hell, for the same price if you waited a year or two, you could probably pick up a cheaper GT-R

That is not a proper sports car. That is a Grand Tourer. If the OP wants a more involved drive than a Boxster can provide, then an XKR will not be fit for purpose. I mean it's an auto for goodness sake.

No doubt that the XKR is a nice car, but not a real sports car - more of an 'i'm getting older so need a nice place to hide' car...

And some autos are still pants with a flappy paddles if you're looking for a stimulating drive. Take something like an AMG merc, which is a quick car, but the flappy paddles don't suddenly make the autobox rewarding to use.

pretty much

although i saw a 135i cabrio today, albeit on swiss plates
i couldn't figure out what the badge was at first from a distance, didn't look like a 125i
fully loaded too, it's good to see they've stopped with the folding satnav screen. it looks a lot better with its own binnacle

If it was my money I would probably get a 3.4 Boxster S - very accomplished and capable.
