Impreza Classic Owners Past and Present Check In.

Looks just like mine :p

TBh if I was going to get rid of mine I would be happy if I got 3k for it.
Has 68000 on it and FSH, though the bodywork could be better.

TBH your situation doesn't sound that dis-similar to mine when I decided to sell the Skyline. Basically all those years of having silly performace cars was eating into the everyday family pot. Yes, it was beginning to **** Mrs DreXeL off, but the main reason I decided to get rid was when I realised that I could spend the money on other more important things, (better family holidays etc) and you know what? It was the best decision I have made in years :)

Sure, I do miss the daft turbo-nutter stuff sometimes but I don't regret it one bit.

My advice? Sell the Vectra, get something cheap but fun, and realise that there's more to life than having 400bhp under your right foot :)

this is exactly what im looking for

but dont have the added luxury of an estima for family duties.

need a car that can do both. Hence looking at ST220s etc..

No you don't NEED a car that does both at all.

Seems to me what you NEED is to get out of the trap of a performance car for a while.

How much do you plan to put away for running this new car? I think you mentioned in your other thread that your Vectra would fetch £10k, and judging by this thread you're looking to spend £4k? You'd only need to put £2k away for emergencies, I can't see anything costing that much. If you manage your finances and put away a fixed amount each month just for running the car you should rarely dip into the left over funds. With this in mind, I would spend £8k on a car, £2k away for emergencies then just put some away each month.

I'm sure I'll be slated but I don't see the ST220 as being much fun. It just doesn't look like fun to me.

It's a 220bhp car, how is not much fun? It's not even that heavy. You wax lyrical about Imprezas enough and on paper they are 'just' 200bhp saloon cars?

Why not drive one?

The benefit of the ST220 here is that on one side, its a reasonably new Ford Mondeo. It is modern, it is comfortable, it is a nice Mondeo. Sensible. Practical. A useful family car. On the other side, it has 220bhp, Recaro seats, Climate Control, Xenons, etc etc.

Whereas a Subaru Impreza is on the one side an awesomely fun rally rep with a great engine and loads of grip but when being used normally its a hopelessly dated generic old Japanese saloon car from the early 90's.

The Mondeo is a better fun family car than an Impreza.

The mrs has actually offered to let me keep the vectra because she saw how unhappy it made me knowing it was having to go.

Ive declined because i know ive got to do something as there will be more big bills comming along. But shes insisted i take some sort of middle ground and not make myself unhappy.

This could also be true. Apart from the brief flirt with the RA, I've pretty much been without a quick car since June 2007.

Sometimes its a drag but other times there is a good feeling of smugness as I can't honestly remember the last time I put fuel in my Golf and theres still just under half a tank to go. It doesn't matter if my daughter climbs over the seats or if I park to close to the bushes at home and scrape the front wing.

The only mod on the golf is this

I dont need to spend 8k when 5-6k will get me a nice ST220.

Can put the rest away, hopefully not need to dip into the funds and then start saving. With any luck the pot will grow rather than shrink.

I cant think of an 8k car that id rather have than a 5 and a bit k ST220.

When I went for a blast with the Pistonheads crew to Malton we had an R26R and Elise in convoy aswell as a modifield MX5 and Mini Cooper S.

The Mondeo is very front heavy and you have to really slow down to not understeer into a hedge. Staight line speed is decent as I caught up with the Mini and MX5 no problems.

Obviously the R26R and Elise flew off ahead. Bloody quick buggers :p

It's an ok car but it's just far too smooth to even feel the performance.

MrLOL if you want an ST220 you can have mine for £4800 :p £200 to get the bumper repaired ;)

Though I know you will get bored!!!

this is exactly what i felt on the test drive. Vectra had exactly the same handling characteristics, but with the added drag of increase torque steer. But the mid range turbo punch was so much fun i forgave it all :D

hence why im still secretly looking at other options like Accord Type R, classic impreza etc..

If the Impreza idea is dead in the water then obviously ignore but if not then EddScotts post is much more relevant and accurate than some of the other stuff above. In particular the passenger safety part...take a look on various forums at some of the crashes that people have walked away from in the classic Impreza in particular. They are safe cars.

As for the St220 idea...is it really going to be that much of an saving over the Vectra in terms of maintenance? Aside from your recent breakage, the spend you mention in respect of the Vx is fairly typical stuff...ok maybe the service you have coming up is a heavy one but tyres and stuff are going to be largely comparable are they not?

If you're seriously looking to save money and not find yourself up in front of the Mrs as a repeat offender in 3 months I think you should go more sensible than an St220...

Compared to a proper subaru it's properly dull. Forget about 200bhp Imprezas they are crap. As I've mentioned already in this thread there's no point in buying a GC8 that isn't an STi.

They're not crap at all. Remind us again what you drive....

She's said this will be fine as we'll have some cash free'd up to pay for any big bills.

If im lucky and dont get any then the pot can go untouched.

I'll also be saving about £300 a year in tyres and tax, so that can go towards other running costs. It may not save me any money, but this time we'll have a rainy day fund to cushion us from any big bills.
