Just read this on the BBC site:

Really glad this is happening at last, means we can have a bigger say in the ESA space missions. Also means we have a unified agency to deal with space missions etc. Be nice if this lead to us having our own space launches but I doubt it. Also like the idea of Virgin Galactic maybe putting a runway in Britain, better start saving my £120,000 for my flight lol.

Well thats great. We can pay for it out of that huge surplus of cash we have. Oh, wait..

Whilst I realise this brings in money, this isn't really the time. It can carry on contributing it's £6bn to the economy for a few years whilst we sort out the hole we're in.

What a ridiculous idea.... I think that maybe we should wait until our economy is booming again, before we invest in such things. :o

Mark my words the UK Space Program will all be run from the mission control shed in Wakefield and consist purely of men with beards ;)

As exciting as it is, I agree with some of the above comments, atleast let the economy settle. Especially as cuts are being made according to the pre budget report - losing another few for the space agency probably isn't such a good idea just yet.

Hopefully it'll be more financially viable than NASA as well, it would be very bad for our economy to have a burden such as that. :(

Im not expert on Space Agency politics/economics but would it not be a better idea to take a more active role within the ESA and poll our resources.

As far as space travel is concerned I'm surprised there is not a more global agency or at least a few more nations pooled together. Just seems to make sense to share resources to me.

However, witih Virgin Galactic getting close to operational it might be a good idea to invest in it in the near future as a money making scheme.

I thought that was the real aim of this, it gives us more say in the ESA

If Britain's space industry currently brings in £6.5bn a year, we should do what we can to nurture this industry and maximise profits, surely?

And there is nothing to indicate that it can't continue to do so, for the next 4-5 years whilst we try and get ourselves out of the **** we're in.

Can anyone tell me what we might gain from such endeavours? We're not Americans we don't need to say "*** yea we've been to the moon".
