Iran are at it again...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/8411621.stm

Iran is to put on trial three US citizens who crossed into Iran while hiking in Iraq, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has said.

This may well spark another debate/heated discussion about iran but i think its high time a firm foot was placed on iran.

I get the feeling they are deliberately creating tensions between itself and the west (UK and US) with the recent detainings of both british and american military/civilian persons. They are also determined to press on with its own nuclear enrichment which is very worrying considering the man in charge is a few branches short of a tree.

Military action may not be far off IMO.

It's propoganda. It'll be within Irans' best interests to release the "spies" to their families. The "spies" will be looked after, well fed and kept warm - only to show the world that Iran is not what people think it is.

You have to be a few screws loose as a US national to go "hiking" anywhere remotely near Iran... I'm not suprised Iran arrested them...

Thats like sticking your hand in a lions mouth then wondering why it bit it off.

Of course they are. Remember the first rule of politics: "All politics is local politics." The President wants to be seen as standing up to the West, in order to stay in the good books of the factions (the religious and the army) who keep him in power. He wants the US to get angry.

how different is this to say, the US nabbing randoms off the street and sending them to Guantanamo without trial? except at least they are getting a trial by Iran?

why would you go hiking on the border of Iran?

Not much, but don't we think that is a bad thing too?

what do you mean? people are suspected of spying here...a trial to ascertain that is fair and due dilligence?

sending someone to a foregn land with no explanation, nor hope of a trial is not.

lets wait for the trial to see whether this is a bad thing or not we shouldnt really judge other nations by our own legal standards.

What if they actually are spies?

Not all spies are James bond.

Wouldn't be that hard for the us to find some patriotic hiking types to just go on a hiking holiday after some rudimentary training and get them to note down/record any useful information they can gather just by posing as hikers.

They don't need to be breaking into high security areas to get useful information.

I mean that trying to justify a nations actions because other nations are just as bad is not really a good thing to do?

I suppose it is possible that some US citizens will get a fair trial in Iran...

as i said though, these people were clearly in a bit of a dodgy place, and besides i am sure the iranians will be at least as civilised as the italians. which is far more civilised than the US.

i am not justifying their actions, merely stating that if a nation seeks fair process for their civillians on foreign soil, then maybe they should offer the same in respect to foreigners detailed in the US?

just because they are of US nationality does NOT mean they are free of guilt, they could very well be spies, or at least have links to the armed forces. in which case it was a stupid place to hike, at the least.

now where did i put my popcorn?

I'm sure they could get a lot more info from all their spy satellites and UAVS without the need for sending in civilians into a place like that!

not really, spy sats can't see anything under such advanced technology as a tarpaulin...

And I'm not sure America is quite willing to blatantly violate Iranian airspace with a UVA without very good reason.

Obviously US retards: as a few have pointed out; who in their right mind would go 'hiking' in that area at present ?
Leave 'em to it, I say .... reap what you sow.

The people suggesting that "they might be spies" obviously haven't read the article.

The irony is that two of these US citizens (Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd) actually live in Damascus, Josh Fattal is a fluent Arabic speaker and his father is said to be Iraqi (not yet confirmed), Shourd is a pro-Palestinian activist and Bauer has been an Al-Jazeera reporter.

Iran won't do herself any favours by imprisoning people who share her own aims!

Not only to go hiking 'near' Iran, but to go on a hiking holiday as a US citizen in bloody IRAQ and stray over the boarder to Iran.

Anyone who thinks these guys were tourists needs their head examining.
