how long before we're all flying cars?

However, before cars were popular, I sure people had a distinctly similar opinion as to yours. They didn't recognise the need or advantage of cars.

Opinions will change, once we've had computer-operate car systems on the ground we then might start too look skywards.

No - you are wrong.

O really, people were reluctant to invest in cars because they didn't feel the need for them.

It's not about there being a need or a demand for them, I can't see us ever being in a position where the masses are trusted with a vehicle that can literally drop on your head. Granted I might be quoted 300 years from now if it happened, but cars are earth bound, much safer and easier to control than anything off the ground. That fundamental fact will be difficult to overcome. Many drivers today don't even seem to have basic spacial awareness whilst under the control of mavity, I dread to think what the self-important motorist would be like if sitting in a vehicle that could move left, right, forward and backwards but also up and down!

There won't be a bird left on the planet after a week :p Goodbye flora and fauna!

Most people can't drive on 4 wheels, what makes it possible that they will be fine with no wheels!

The thought of Joe Public being unleashed in flying vehicles fills me with dread.

I'll be the judge of that!

It isn't really because introducing the "flying car" would result in a complete rework of cities, roads, safety and not to mention the new training involved. Everyone would need to train to be a pilot of sorts.

Cars worked right away because they fitted into cities and towns, fowards backwards, left and right. If you brought in "up and down" then it changes a lot. People can barely drive as it is, so flying at whatever speed and at whatever altitude would be a death trap.

Until the right propulsion, right safety measures, right training, easy to use mechanically so that Chav McChav and granny and grandad can use it, the right design of a city that would allow it to even happen, then maybe its doable. :)

people probably said the same thing when coming from horse and cart to cars, and look where we are.

I think hovering cars is a certainty, but thats what they will be - hovering cars. We'll never be released with free roaming flying vehicles. By the time hover cars do come into place, there will be no possibility of them being able to leave certain routes/tracks, if any manual control is even given to the occupant.

James May said it wion't happen any more because of h&s bs. People had the same attitudes towards cars as we do to flying cars, but they didn't also have restrictions in law, they had pioneers that went on and made a car anyway. If we have a flying car pioneer he will need about 100 different licenses and will be taxed to high heaven.

I'll never be a flying car, I was born a human and I'll die one! :p

Also why are people being a little pedantic saying "ohh they're called planes/heli's", it's quite obvious what the OP means when he says flying car.

For what it's worth I don't think we'll see anything like that in any of our lifetimes here, maybe our children's, children might though. At the moment we are still trying to crack alternative fuels and global warming. Besides, the world as we know it could cease to exist before something like this is established.

It will possibly happen, but only if the technology is available to make them cost effective, we can't even drive our cars these days, never mind hover cars.

until there is some kind of break though that allows cars to hover without massive roters and gallons of fuel and noise then it isn't happening.

Likely we will get muti story roads and underground roads before this happens.

Because they wont have any control. It will be totally computer controlled.

Again no, it will be computer controlled, public will have no control of their vehicles. This will happen in cars well before we get flying cars. So everyone will be used to the idea. We also need a new power source and engine before flying cars can happen.

lol computer controlled cars sound fine ... until someone makes a virus for them ...

also no doubt someone would mod theirs with some illegal **** on :P lmao

exactly! ...

plus planes are like part human controlled anyways, i meant if the cars are connected to a main server that controls them, it could happen ...

exactly! ...

I think you missed the point. when last did a plane crash on auto pilot due to a virus..

They will have external and internal guidance. If external has a problem they will fly on internal systems which more than likely would be hard-wired. So no your point is rather silly, it's just you are not used to the idea. There is a big push for computer controlled cars and it will happen at some point. The public like always will get used to it pretty quickly.
