rage against the x-factor - Outcome: RATM is the Christmas Number One!

Well there you go, the DJ said he was involved with a campaign to get Mad World to number 1, if they're doing it themselves then it can't be a problem.

Its been done many times in the past, Chris Moyles and Terry Wogan have all backed certain songs on their shows for number 1.

I don't believe the DJ is the chart company.
And Facebook is?

Surely coinciding a national televised singing competition to release its winning single at the same time as the chirstmas charts is also manipulation.
If Christmas no.1 was the highest selling record from the full year and not just the week before, then fair enough but it isnt.

If Xfactor finished in June, it would never be No.1

X-Factor is designed to make money, not distort the charts. It may distort them in the process, but that is not a contravention of the rules. The ruling is that it is not allowed to act in a way designed to distort the charts. The RATM groups were designed to distort the charts.

The distinction is incredibly obvious.

You don't think the timing of the winner being announced and the release of their single is designed to distort the xmas charts?

You are miss interpreting the rules as the chart company does not agree with you.

As I've said earlier, acting a way that is not designed to distort the charts, but does, is fine. Simon Cowell does not run the X-Factor show for the intention of distorting the charts. He does so, and times it so, to make the most money he can. The RATM groups were not designed for any purpose than to distort the charts.

I don't think they've made any rulings on it yet. Either way, whether they do or do not agree with my interpretation, is not necessarily dependant on whether they choose to take action or not.

This manipulation thing is rubbish anyway, it's not an issue and I don't see why it's been so heavily debated on here for the last three pages (or however many it's been). It's just fallover from the Joe forums.

So getting a great song to #1 is distorting the charts. People buying a song they like isn't allowed.
