*The Bluray Quality Thread*

Hellboy 2 9/10 - Absolutely brilliant colours, shadows and definition.

Rocky Balboa 8/10 - As far as detail goes this is a very detailed film.

I, Robot 9/10 - Brilliant all round picture!

Transformers 8/10 - Nice colours, definition and detailed effects.

Casino Royale 10/10 - Still remains one of the best Blu-rays I have seen to date.

Spiderman (1-3) 9/10 - Good detail in both picture and special effects.

The Day After Tomorrow 9/10 - Excellent picture and sound!

Those are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head right now, so I'll be sure to add more later.

Interested in getting all the above so happy to hear they are very good quality.

Which ones are they? :)
To be watched:

Top Gun
Forest Gump

Will be getting Band of Brothers and Terminator Salvation for Xmas.

Pondering also to get the Bourne Ultimate Collection at some point too :) Oh and Something Something Something Darkside Family Guy :D

300 - 10/10 - A must own BD imo. Quality, sounds and CGI were all amazing.

Transformers 2 - 9/10 - Again, couldn't fault it. Rich colours, very crisp, great sound. Megan Fox looks awesome in HD !

Band of Brothers - 10/10 - Not the best quality but an amazing improvement on TV and DVD. Giving it a 10 on the whole package provided.

Right here's my entire collection*

  1. Batman Begins: A quality image, but not enough flashiness to show off the picture. The best demo disc for testing how black your TV's blacks really are though ;) 8/10
  2. Blade Runner: Absolutely stunning, a must buy. If it weren't for the obvious 1980s fashion of the film betraying its age you could be forgiven for thinking it was a new release. They spent so much time and money making it look fantastic. Get it. Just import the US five disc version (region free), not the ghetto UK version. 10/10
  3. Casino Royale: a nice modern movie to show off the TV, lots of colour. Sometimes the picture looks a little too sharp though. 9/10
  4. Children of Men: Not the best quality against super modern pictures, but that's part of the cinematography of the film. 8/10
  5. The Dark Knight: Just watch the IMAX scenes, especially the opening scene and Hong Kong at night on a 42inch screen and remember to stop drooling. 10/10
  6. Kill Bill Vol 1: This gets bonus points because the vibrant comic-book colour pallet and fast cuts to black-and-white and everything else in between really make the picture pop. 9/10
  7. Kill Bill Vol 2: As good a transfer as the first part, but not the variety of colour to show off the quality of Blu-ray. 8/10
  8. Matrix Trilogy: A mixed bag, I expected more. The first film's desaturated/green picture does pop quite nicely, the finale, though a rubbish film, gets points for the watercolour scene when their hovercraft breaks through the clouds near the end, though the middle film is a bit flat. 7/10
  9. Moon: Great movie, but unfortunately Blu-ray makes the film's tiny budget stand out. The models look like models to be frank. 6/10
  10. Serenity: Another great film, some nice fancy CG-work that benefits from the format, though nit-pickers will be annoyed by the grain effect in places. 8/10
  11. Star Trek: As a modern film anything less than perfect would be a let down. Luckily it looks fantastic. The opening section is my favourite part, though there are pretty bits throughout. I thought the 'Cloverfield-space-monster' stood out as CGI mind, so it loses a point. 9/10
  12. Terminator 2 (Skynet Edition): Make sure you get this edition over the earlier release, there's a difference in package contents and film quality. Another one I was disappointed with it has to be said. It looks great but after the job done with Blade Runner I was hoping this classic would look better. 8/10

*It should be noted that unlike the hundreds of DVDs I own, my rule for buying a Blu-ray is: 'will I want to watch this in a decade's time?'

I recommend visiting http://www.highdefdigest.com for in depth reviews and to avoid picking up crappy discs.

Ooops just found another one.

The Forbidden Kingdom - 9/10 (Very, very clear picture in some amazing Jade Empire type environments. Magical effects and fight scenes make this an excellent Bluray, quality is easily a 9/10)

Batman Begins / The Dark Knight are both quality on Bluray. I just wish I had and amp etc to have the true HD experience !
The first ever HD content I saw was a Dark Knight clip on YouTube. Quite staggering stuff.

And please don't tempt me into getting an amp and speaker set!:o

To be watched:

Top Gun
Forest Gump
Hmm Tom Cruise in HD? No thanks. :D

Will be getting Band of Brothers and Terminator Salvation for Xmas.
BoB is .

Pondering also to get the Bourne Ultimate Collection at some point too :)
Quit pondering, get purchasing!

  1. Blade Runner and Children of Mine on my list of BRs to get at some point. Casino Royale will probably be bought sooner. :)

Serenity? OMFG awesome 11/10 easily. It's what i use to show off the tv. Very bright, very vivid.

Band of Brothers. This keeps the grain of the original but even the grain looks better. If that makes sense. Just wish the wife wasn't home for a couple of days so i could carry on watching it.

rambo 4 - 3/10 Poor CGI

Not the best film but I thought the video and audio quality was excellent. Good for showing off your setup.

As for other blu-rays:

Planet Earth: 10/10 (Some shots are just astonishing, can't be said enough.)
Wall-E: 10/10
Transformers: 8/10

and

Monsters inc: 11/10 (Awesome!)

Probably all mentioned already.

I actually think The Dark Knight is a terrible Blu-ray except for the IMAX scenes. The scenes shot on 30mm have sharpening and edge enhacement all over them... When you compare those 35mm scenes to Batman Begins, you can clearly see that 35mm shouldn't look like that...

Wall-E - 9.5/10
Zohan - 7.5/10
Bruno - 8/10
Terminator 2 - TBC
The Matrix - TBC
Inglorious ******** - TBC

And now the one you've all been waiting for....

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - 8.5/10 (for the image quality, -99.7 for Radcliffe's acting quality)

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - 9.5/10 (I bought this in one of those buy 1 get 1 free deals. Its hard to fault anything about it, its smooth, colourful, fast, bright and incredibly detailed. But then its CGI, its kind of like cheating to me so no 10/10)

I saw on AV Forums that FF7 AC was low picture quality, but I am like you, when I watched it, it was amazing!
Such a beautiful film!

We just got a new 32inch LCD TV today and a Bluray player. We watched my copy of Star Trek for the inaugural screening and even though I've watched it before on my PC, this time it was stunning. Like being at the cinema but better; you can pause. :D

It is a stunning transfer isn't it? When I first fired it up myself I was staggered at just how crystal clear the film actually is. You can actually make out the individual chin bristles on characters, even in panning shots.

Hmm you've forced me to rewatch it over Christmas now! I'm usually quick to pick up on edge enhancement as it sticks out and pulls me out of the film.

Transformers - 8/10 - Good transfer, actually makes the fast moving fight sequences watchable.

Star Trek - 10/10 - best Blu-Ray I have, excellent.

Indy and Crystal skull - 7/10 - Pretty good but I find some of the panning jerky but that may be my player.

Wall-E - 9/10 beautiful to watch, second best of my limited collection.

Independence Day - 5/10 - Not that much better than an upscaled DVD, it could be better.

Batman Begins - 8/10 - great transfer, the dark bits are much more watchable than upscaled DVD.

Dark Knight - 9/10 - I like the IMAX sequences and again the format suits the fast-moving action.
