Why is PS3 online free and xboxlive not?

Well, Microsoft have started adding a lot of bonuses to being gold, like 1 vs 100, the facebook/lastfm/twitter apps along with weekly discounts to games. Other than that, the actual game playing is mostly P2P on both systems so there's not much difference in the actual "service".

One thing I will add is that the 360's online features are hugely superior to the PS3.

i prefer the xbox over the ps3 i have both, its easier to talk to more than one person

using XBL using the headset. Gnerally i have found the servers to be better on xbox and

i dont mind paying less than 10p a week :D

You need to tell me where I get XBL for £5.20 for the year. ;)

I think it's mainly because the PS3 was initially a lot more expensive than the 360, so they had to include some things to justify the cost.

I know the PS3 is a better media device overall but for many people not paying for the Online may have been the dealbreaker considering the cost.

now the price is down, they're thinking about adding a sub based service, but won't interfere with the current service provided.

Plus Microsoft had a better advertisement campaign, I hardly seen PS3 advertised outside of game stores and supermarkets, bus shelters.

I think the PSN will end up doing what i always said MS should do. They will have MP gaming for free, but all the bells and whistles that casual folk (like myself) don't use will need a higher tier sub, things like party chat, demo's a week or 2 earlier, maybe the odd beta etc.

xbox live would be great if they changed the model so silver and gold where as they are now, but silver had MP gaming. But then again, all these bells and whistles folk go on about, would hardly get used and nobody would take a sub lol

Well u can get facebook and twitter on the PS3 through the web browser. :p
Plus the PS3 will auto update your facebook feed to say what trophies you have. The xbox 360's facebook integration is pig awful IMO. Need to launch a diff app, and even then, it still never updates my achievements (although i dunno if it is supposed to lol, if not it is totally pointless IMO)

The NXE is starting to show it's limits now and is hugely cumbersome, and ****ing awful for finding what you are looking for. Bring back the blades!!!!

The truth, I hate it I rarely use it and almost always use the old blades through the guide button. I never scroll through that friends list. I would love an option to turn everything off on nxe except the launch game window.

There is talk of PSN going sub-based, but that's nothing new.

I don't think I would bother playing online if I had to pay for it. Sounds sad, it's not as if it's particularly expensive, but online has never been a console priority for me. I wouldn't have tried MW2 if I had to pay for it and I certainly wouldn't have played Wii online to pay for that either. It's daft really as I now quite enjoy it.

My brother stopped using his PS3 for online when he got an Xbox and he much prefers the Xbox service. His Xbox is banned now so he's back on the PSN and is happy enough with it.

Xbox Live is marginally better than the PSN overall, in terms of core functionality for online gaming they're both fine, but the 360 is better for friend management.

Personally i don't think it justifies the cost though, when my years sub is up i won't be renewing. None of the benefits they've been adding really affect me other than maybe 1 vs 100. I hate facebook and twitter, have cable TV and have never got out of 'the mob' in 1 vs 100 despite nearly always getting answers correct.

Ironically the only big feature that really makes a difference for me is dedicated servers supporting as many a 64 player servers in some games and that's supplied by the free service, the PSN.

The reason PSN is free is due to the developers paying for bandwidth etc, XBL supposedly has a better matchmaking facility and a better selection of DLC (demo's and expansion packs) due to the developers not taking the hit, but infact the gamers (£25-£40 p/a).

Think developers have to pay $0.16 per GB downloaded, which soon mounts up and that includes demo's, DLC you name it they have to fork out for it. Which means they have to be careful what is put up to be downloaded as a 1gb demo downloaded a million times is the equivalent of $160k..
Do you have a source for this? Read a few comments on this - just wondering where this rumor is from?

Yeap, or at least give options to turn things back to lists. Sure the friends list on NXE is all pretty with the wee dudes standing there, but it is a total PITA! I don't wanna have to scroll for ages finding out what folk are doing by looking at the stupid box cover.

I find hitting the guide button then scrolling through the friends list far more user friendly. I can't remember the last time i actually scrolled through the god awful avatar list, which makes the idea of purchasing costumes for them even more silly to me :p

Indeed, I wasn't saying why XBL was better I was really making the comparison between gold and silver.

AFAIK the facebook app does not have that feature, which I was expecting too, the only one of those apps I actually use is the last fm one, rarely.

I don't find the NXE interface too bad, not sure I ever had a problem finding something, and if you're fussy you can always press the guide button and get to stuff that way.

I like the way that xbl has all those videos and features ready for you to watch when you log in, I personally like the way it's organized vs the PS3, there just seems so much more to the xbox. imo the PS3 needs a new interface, it's just too limited, it works fine on the PSP, but for a system that's supposed to be the best media console out there it seems very lacking.

I think in reality though it makes very little difference as developers have always paid their bandwidth costs on other platforms, so this isn't causing them to reconsider releasing demo's or DLC on PSN. Their also not forced to distribute over Sony's network if they don't want to pay these costs, and are seemingly free to do it entirely theirselves hence why we've seen some games which use their own patching systems based on bittorrent to distribute large content updates (Metal Gear Online for example).

I can't see Microsoft dropping the fee anytime soon as long as the "it's only £25 per year" attitude remains. People are happy to pay for very little, so it's easy money for them. Who can blame them. :)

You are talking abot a PS3 exclusive game going the effort of setting up it's own content delivery system, not many developers will goto the trouble of that especially when content on the 360 doesn't cost the publisher a thing (bar their console liscence fees) and the PC doesn't cost publishers a thing either due to places like fileplanet and other delivery system (which you usually have to subscribe for to get the best download speed due to bandwidth costs).

Not saying it doesn't make a huge difference, but if I were a developer I would steer clear of the PS3 for many reasons (I own a ps3), due to the architecture of the system being that much mroe complex aswell as the increased cost of launching anything to be downloaded. I would stick with the PC/360 platform similar to Valve's stance. Not a bash at all but the PS3 isn't the most friendliest machine to work on and the fact that you ahve increased costs from porting over you get shafted to delvier it to people.

Like I said not starting a flame war or a console war, just doesn't seem much of a carrot to get more titles onto it..
