The police would rather stay warm, than go out in the cold an arrest people.

Sack the ******* if this is true.

And of course it is for some.

If you belong to the police force do you know what a noner is, and what happens.

If you don't then get another job please.

It may be true for some, but i think the majority would be highly offended by his comments.

Well, i have seen the bad side of the police force, as i think we all have.

If my last statement is true (you decide) then things are worse than i thought.

While i agree that there may be a few "bad eggs" in the police force, i still believe that the majority of policemen (and women) want to be out on the streets reducing crime.

They don't reduce crime they just make it an official statistic for the insurance companies.

lol edited to make sense!

I suspect Mr Straw has just annoyed pretty much every Officer, except for a few who the rest don't like anyway (it may apply to some of the more useless sort* but that is probably about it). Again.
Mind you there is nothing new there, I don't think most politicians are much liked by the police anyway as they don't seem to have much of a clue about anything other than making comments the press will like:p

Most officers appear to dislike the amount of generally excessive paperwork they have to do and would much prefer to spend the time actually enforcing the law/being on the street from what i've heard/seen.

*The ones who probably get the paperwork exacty right and get promoted off the street ASAP.

I think I may go rob Jack Straws house.
I'll ask the local old bill to give me a lift there I'm sure they won't mind & whilst I am raping his daughters & wife they can laugh at him down the phone when he calls 999.

It Always makes me laugh when people slate the Police.
If an Axeman was in your back yard who would you call ?
A mate ? Your Dad ?
No you would call a ****** Policemen a Stranger to you that would come & take him on for YOU whilst yo hid behind the sofa !!!!
 + :p

The irony is that it is Jack Straw's party that have created this situation with paperwork and targets that could be used to hide behind if people wanted...

This is why businesses spend a long time considering the consequences of their actions, while politicians meddle and do what they think will lead them to a popular position and wonder why they fail at everything remotely business related...

Firstly, the bulk of the paperwork burden is as a result of the bureaucracy that his government has heaped on officers.

Officers who attend a domestic incident have to fill in a seperate booklet for the attention of the DV unit and for many forces it is paper based, this is in addition to the information needed for the electronic log. They take at least 15 minutes to fill in and it is not uncommon for an officer(s) to attend half a dozen domestics on a busy shift. That is 90 minutes of paperwork for domestics alone and seperate from other forms that may need filling in.

Racist or homophobic incidents have a similar form to fill in for the relevant department. That is seperate to any prosecution file for the case if applicable.

Any person stopped and searched ..... 10 minute form to fill in. It isn't uncommon for half a dozen people to be stopped on a shift.

Any person stopped and accounted, ie you match a description we are looking for, oh I'm sorry sir it isn't you after all ...... stop and account form to fill in for some forces. Labour idea by the way.

A simple arrest for a shoplifting can tie up an officer for a whole shift. Arrest, booking in, possible solicitor and associated waiting time, information from officer, speaking to client before interview, interview, charge ( if applicable ) and file preparation. That is with an admission.

If they decide they want to no reply or deny it, that may warrant CPS advice so add further delay. All this time, one or more officer is off the street with the phones buzzing loudly and the public wanting help.

Some forces has paper based crime recording that is scanned onto an electronic system for crime investigation and management ..... then the form is destroyed once on the system. What kind of thinking is that ?

CPS advice may say that there is insufficient to proceed and more statements are required ...... only for this to be done and the CPS saying there is no case. Countless hours wasted chasing people and paper for the CPS to then say no.

Officers, aside from responsing to incidents, have their own enquiries on the go as well. Assaults, thefts etc etc and that is a paperchase. Statements, notebook entries, liaising with other forces and agencies.

The list goes on and on and on.

While some officers are bone idle and whose skin wouln't graft, the majority work hard and try to scale the paperwork Olympus that has got steadily worse under the current government, including when Mr straw was Home Secretary.

I wouldn't expect such an insincere and blinkered man who is more into spin and polish than reality to understand and some of us were in that church in upper Manhatten, New York City on September 10th 2002 when he, as Foreign Secretary, made the most insincere and couldn't care less speech possible before scurrying out a side door and not speaking to any of the families of the British victims of 9/11.

His comments are offensive to say the least to the hard working officers who are saddled with the governments obsession with targets, micro-management and red tape.

In short Mr Straw ...... shut up.

I know of a PCSO that just goes round his mates house most of the time (which just happens to be on his beat). Sure the guy in question was just using the job as a stop gap for the marines but its not unbelievable to think others do the same / similar.

The same guy also said that there are plans to convert all existing PCSOs into full blown police officers? If that's true I hope they weed out the retards first!

My local police seem pretty good so respect to them, no complaints from me :)

The funding of PCSOs isn't all from police budget, funding is provided mostly by Home Office grants and the local councils.
So with police forces having to make £500m cuts, I can't see this happening.

Also If they weed out the retards, there wouldn't be anybody left to recruit :D

I think all his comments need to be taken in context. He compares neighbouring forces with each other - concluding that a main reason for differences in performance is down to the lack of discipline of the workforce, and the inability of management to impart a hardworking ethic on the staff. I can 100% buy this argument. There is definitely a percentage of the population that is inherently (sp?) lazy and need whipped to work hard. If they're not getting whipped then they will 'stay in the warm'. Good for jack Straw to have the balls to come out and take on one of the 'untoucheables' (nurses, police, teachers).

I think we all want a Police force and a legal process which is accountable and auditable, hence the paperwork.
Jack Straw is probably right that you can take four hours to complete some paperwork that can be done in one, if you take the wrong attitude. A workforce can apply such a mindset to any new practices. Trouble is, these aren't exactly new practices and such doggedly determined gritted-teeth bloody mindedness is entrenched.
Good old 'You don't know Jack!'

You’ll have to say that louder because Jack Straw and Alan Johnson can’t hear you. ;)

And never will. There is not one Home Secretary who has listened to the concerns of frontline police officers in the nigh on 10 years I have been in the job.

The best Home Secretary this country has had in a long time is, wait for it, Michael Howard.

We need someone of his calibre and mettle in the post right now.

Accountability is a must and neccessary paperwork is one thing. The trouble with the police service right now is the unneccessary paperwork which could be greatly reduced with little effort if politicians took note at the swathes that are not required or are duplicate, triplicate and sometimes more.

From your comments, and please don't take offence as I sincerely mean you none, can I assume that you are not on the force ?

Von Smallhausen has basically summed it all up.

If you actually believe what Jack Straw has said is indicative of the majority of Police Officers then you (and I do really apologies for being so blunt) are an idiot.

Here is an example of what most Police Officers have to put up with.

Last night (thats right New Years Eve), when you may have been at a Party or tucked up nicely and cosy in bed, I was on a 4pm to 4am shift. My Normal shift should have been a 2pm to midnight shift.

I was told without any right of appeal that I WOULD be working a 4pm to 4am shift. I didn't argue, I just got on with it.

At 3am, after every single Cell in the County that I worked in was full and after having atteneded about 10 incidents of disorder, drunkeness etc., in a very busy City Centre, I was told that I wasn't going off duty at 4am - I was now to stay on until 5am.

At 3.30am myself and a Female Officer (no others at all) had to face down a Group of 6 males who had been ejected from a Nightclub for fighting by the doormen. They still wanted to rip each others faces off. How we managed to contain it without injury is still a mystery to me.

At 4.45am I along with two other Officers we were again told we weren't to go off duty at 5am, but we were now required to make our way to our Custody Suite. Due to the fact that there were now no free cells, the Force had decided to double up the cells (ie risk assess the prisoners) and put two non-violent prisoners in each cell to cope with the influx. Our role was to ensure these doubled up prisoners did not kick off on each other or die in their sleep due to their self inflicted intoxication.

At 0630 hrs I was told I wasn't needed any more. However due to dealing with a Female who had been assaulted by her so called boyfriend earlier in the night, who had gallantly and bravely run off like a coward before we arrived, I had to complete the paperwork so that the morning staff could hunt him down during the Course of New Years Day.

This paperwork wasn't something I wanted to do, but had to do, since it was required as evidence that would hopefully secure a conviction.

As I sat in the station I was surrounded by about 8 staff from the Night shift who had just about managed to come in to do the same thing with their jobs. At that precise moment staff from the Early shift (start at 7am) came in, so you had the rather odd situation that People from Earlies, Afternoons (me) and Night Shift were actually all on duty at the same time.

I finally got home at 9am this morning. You and that twit Straw tell me I am a workshy individual who never leaves the building... Yeah all the best mate.
