When someone is downloading and/or uploading a particularly large amount of information over a long period of time, it can slow down the broadband speed for other users who might just be checking their email or browsing online. So to make sure our service is fair for everybody, we sometimes moderate the speeds for the top 5% of customers who are downloading and/or uploading an unusually large amount.

This makes sure that the service doesn't get blocked up with people using more than their fair share - which means a lot fewer traffic jams.

People using more than their fair share? If I'm paying for unlimited broadband, then it's fair that I can download more than 3gigs at peak time

I've downloaded 5gigs in the last 2 days and I think most of it has been during traffic management times, so my speed is now chugging at 6kbps :(

I'm considering moving isp, could anyone please recommend me one that is reasonably fast, and doesn't cap me to 3gig at peak times. I'm currently on Virgin 10mb.

Thanks :)

the problem you'll have is after having cable you may struggle to get a decent broadband connection

my problem wss distance from exchange so it meant going from 20 meg with virgin to a max of 5 meg with sky so some shiftyness later and a cancellation at virgin

i've retained my 20meg broadband and now with sky :) and having the joys of 2 connections

Check if you can get o2 / Be in your area - one of the better ISP's IMO.

ok, thanks for that will check those out. Do they have the 3 strikes policy for torrents, like virgin? Not that I'm considering breaking the law :)

My vrigin is quite fast, and the exchange is a 5 - 10 min walk down the road :)

I believe all Virgin packages below XXL are subject to the policy, to varying degrees. You can either upgrade your package with Virgin Media to something that is more suited to your needs or consider moving to an ADSL LLU service.

You need to weigh up what speeds/quotas you can get using your phone line and whether you're willing to pay £120 to have a BT line installed against Virgin Media's speeds and quotas.

I've got a BT line as we use that for phone, so that shouldn't be a problem. Don't really want to go to 50mb as it's £40 a month

One less expense to consider then. Have you checked to see what ADSL speeds are available in your area and the approximate speed your line will be to handle?

I'd have cable over ADSL any day. Why not just schedule large downloads during off peak times?

ADSL2+ should be here by march 2011 :D

EDIT: I'm 501 metres from the exchange :)

It would be inconvenient, as the only time I can really be downloading is when I'm awake and at home, and the off peak times are during the night :(

In that case and if you're willing to accept the reduced speed for a year or so then Be* are very highly rated. Also, if you have an O2 phone I believe you can get discounted rates with them as they're the same network.

EDIT: I think you have to contact O2 and sign-up with them if you decide to go that route.

Before you sign up with O2, make sure you can get their LLU service - their BT Wholesale version is as bad, if not worse, than Virgin Media...

Yup you're good to go. Go for o2 Premium at £10pm though, all Pro offers is some extra upload at the expense of download bandwidth and other stuff you don't need.

That 6.5mb estimate from Freeola was based on ADSL btw. A line that gave you 6.5mb on ADSL could equate to ~15mb with an ADSL2+ service like o2 Premium/Pro.

just download at night providing you have no faults on the cable line they are the fastest for home users period
