So you've got £27,000 in CASH for a car yet £220 insurance difference appeals.

This thread is almost as stupid as Booners for the whole I HAVE CASH MUST SPLURGE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I WANT factor.

I'll bite this time, I want to know why you still feel the need to single me out as some kind of idiot in front of everyone on here?

I fail to see how my current car upgrade thread is stupid? I have money for a car. I ask for options for a car to buy in a motoring forum. I am not financing, I am not complaining about insurance, I am not insuring it in my dads name etc etc, yet in Fox's world it's now stupid for somebody else to upgrade their car for any other reason than crashing or simply being a millionaire. I for one, enjoy change and welcome it... :)

I'm not, its just that you happen to have the other 'Help me spend a huge amount of money on something I'm not entirely sure about yet' thread thats all, if it was MrBlobby who'd posted it I'd have said MrBlobby. I can assure you its nothing personal :)

Ok thanks. Why is such a thread so ridiculed on here if it's legit though? is is because of dreamers or people who just post because they will be buying in 1-7+ years time? I mean, sure...I learnt that lesson a few years back when I was aiming to buy a car in a years time and had wanted a vx220, but could afford a 350z by the time it came around.

I just find it slightly insulting, taking my thread for example, if funds are there and the need of the op is for a car change (without financial opinions wanted), that's this forum treats it with such negative and snide comments. Which is a real shame, because sometimes people post on here for a varied response from a wide variety of car tastes and motoring experience, not to get publically slandered and receive a witch burning from nay sayers.

I think the reason for most "I am not sure what to buy threads" is because most people are afraid that they like a certain car and once purchased, will receive a grilling on here from the regulars of the forum...so want to make sure they cover all their bases/options before going ahead. That is all :)

Is that guy who claimed to have an MR2 roadster then drove it around not insured then crashed it, cause of defective tyres still an active member?

Zing......

I guess sometimes when somebody posts that they are doing something you get a hunch that in 3 years time they'll post 'Wish I'd never done that'. Generally when huge sums of money are involved in car purchase and the OP has interesting circumstances (Not doubting legitimacy here, having that much money at 21 is interesting - and in a good way, becuase its damn good on you) and limited experience, this hunch is far more likely. I personally, as do a few others in the thread, feel that when you get to say 26 you'll think 'If only I hadnt changed car so often'.

Perhaps its just because we have different ways of thinking about things - I respect the fact I am the polar opposite of you when it comes to car purchase. Even now, 3.5 years after I bought mine I am agonising over whether its just too early to swap it for an M5 and nobody could say that amount of time is too soon. You just dont know what else will happen in life and its a shame if you are prevented from taking future opportunities because you'd spent a fortune on a largely un-neccesary car purchase.

Its perhaps easier to make an exception when it comes to buying a dream car. If you've always, always wanted a particular car then perhaps thats an itch that might NEED to be scratched. Perhaps thats me and the E39 M5. I seem to recall it was the reason you gave for buying the 350Z 5 months before you could even insure it - so again it seems strange its time to get rid of it already. But its obviously not the case again. You dont have clear focus of what you want, you just want 'some £20k fast flash car' it seems.

I am obsessed with cars. I read about them constantly, I drive as many as I can, I like nothing more than to talk about them with whoever will listen at great length. However I used to be even more obsessed with cars - any money earnt was earnt for one purpose and one purpose alone - to buy cars, spend on cars, or do something else car related. Even as recently as a year or two ago I pretty much still had this opinion. If I got a pile of money it would obviously go on a car. I mean, what else would you buy? Cars are everything...

....but you know what? I'm not sure they are. And I think you are where I was at your age only with more cash. And I suspect that as you get a bit older, you'll also change your viewpoint a bit.

There is more to cars even if you dont quite realise it yet. Just make sure you've always got a decent petrolhead car, but think long and hard about whether the constant rush for the next best thing is really a good idea.

As another even more tenuous example when I was 16 I used to do it with mobile phones (lol). Always the latest most expensive Nokia. What a waste of money.

I'm sure some people, probably yourself included, will assume some of the opinions against your choice are perhaps as a result of jealousy. I cant speak for others but it isnt the case here and I doubt its the case with others. After all, nobody questions Houseys choice of car or tells him he's daft for spending the money. But then he's in a different situation.

It's certainly not a personal thing against you, I have nothing against you (Except driving that 350Z uninsured - somebody from here saw you driving it btw). We've had this in the past a few years ago and then a few years later you said you now saw my point :)

Ding to this.

Whilst I am naturally quite an indecisive person (which I openly admit as my flaw) I do like to check with previous owners of said car for any quirks or things to look out for.
I learnt my lesson with my MR2 - it suffered pre-cat failure and cost me a new engine, ALL because I didn't ask around for what seemed like an ultimate steal of a car.

So now, whilst i'm really sorry for enabling you lot for bumping up your post counts with your distilled hatred and contempt (;)), i'm playing this one more cautiously before spunking my hard earned/saved on a new car.

A useful, well considered opinion there. Thanks for your input!

No problem, you lot are laughable at time, truly hilarious how soem of you can pass on an opinion of a car you have barely driven. Havr you chucked a 135i around a track then?

Actually, have you ever been on a track?

Well I can't speak for Fox but I'd consider a 135i a chuckable car. I have held a race national A license (although now lapsed) and have raced at places like Silverstone, Spa Francorchamps and as part of the British Formula 3/GT Racing support package. Good enough?

I also have kids, don't live at home and I have life experience, so my opinion counts for more than yours.* :D

*The usual line by people who have a go at fox

Since when did "chuckable" only apply on a track

Actually, since when did it become anything other than a relative term

My opinion in cars is based on road use. I have done a few thousand miles in various M Sport 1 Series cars on the road.

Have you?

Oh, and I have driven on a track but only the once ;)

Well, to not create a new thread, i'd just like to say that i've gotten myself a replacement car.

Kind of. I still have my MR2 but have as well an Elise SC (brand new). I will take delivery end of next week due to the weather, not that I could use it much before then anyway, so pics will follow!
