So these are really to try and phase out core 2 duo? Don't seem quite worth it right now with the price tag.
 
Azza, do you think there would be that much advantage upgrading from say an 8600 -> i5 661 given the very poor memory performance of Clarkdale?

In a way yes because both AMD & Intel are working towards fully integrating CPU(s) and GPU(s) into one package which is going to become more mainstream over the next year or so.

If you wanting best overall performance especially for gaming then no. It's priced exactly the same as the i5 750, which requires the same socket motherboard and that gives much better overall performance so would be better upgrading to that. Obviously you need the graphics card to go with that CPU.
 
Bleh could just get a phenom II or athlon II for the same price and it will generally perform better. Its an old i5/i7 with less cores but using HT... meh... not impressed. 32nm dosent make up for the lack of 2 cores.

Has anyone seen a review of how the onboard graphics compares with other integrated solutions such as the ION?

If it compares favourably, does it seem likely that a mini-itx board may be around soon that would make a great mini htpc?

From what I understand Clarkedales are an excellent basis for a HTPC, although the integrated graphics performance still lags behind ION.

The other issue is that its pricing at the high end just doesn't make any sense. There isn't a single Core i5 I'd recommend, but the i3s are spot-on. To Intel's credit, though, if it priced the Core i5s more aggressively, I'm not sure there would be much room for AMD to compete. Perhaps killing competition isn't what Intel wants either....
