German luxury car marque Mercedes-Benz has added a cabriolet option to its already popular E-Class range.

Owners of the cabriolet version will be able to open and close the E-Class's soft fabric roof within just 20 seconds – even when driving at speeds of up to 25mph.

And unlike other cabriolets, the E-Class Cabriolet is a drop-top that Mercedes-Benz wants owners to feel that they can drive all year long. To this end, the well insulated acoustic soft top ensures minimal interior noise, which means you can drive it in the windiest of conditions without having the experience ruined by the elements.

From our perspective, the soft top really adds to the desirability of the already dreamy E-Class model, so if you're in the market for a cabriolet, it's definitely worth checking out.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet should go on sale in the UK in March 2010. Prices are yet to be announced.

If I have it right:
C Class - Compact Exec Saloon
CLC - Compact Exec Coupe
E Class - Mid Size Exec Saloon
CL Class - S Class Coupe
S Class - Full Size Exec Saloon

So then what's an E Class cabriolet? An E or CL class? Both?

Really?

Does that mean the CLC competes with the 1 series, rather than than a 3xxCi/D? Or both?

god knows what it competes with. it's ****, and the only people that buy it now are grey and wrinkly
it used to compete with the 3 series compact, but that was killed off a while ago

Yes. It's just a heap of toss, it's Mercs 3 Series Compact. It should have died years ago.

Same. Just learnt it's actually an S class!

No, the CLK was a C Class based Coupe/Cabrio but with E Class styling. It is the competitor to the 3 Series Coupe.

It is now dead, and Merc have moved its replacement upmarket.

I understand the A, B, C, E, S classes but all the other coupes and inbetween cars confuse me. I can't fit them into a model range in my head, based on a C but with E styling, priced as an E class but based on an S etc...

Must just be me being an idiot.

the E class coupe is not based on an S
it's actually built on the new C-class platform

i don't really see what's so confusing.
instead of replacing the CLK with another BMW 3 series competitor, they've added it to the E class range

i wouldnt bet money on that. wiki isnt always right

and look at the rubbish spouted there. some of the rubbish on that board makes it sound like the audi sport board!

Exactly, I'm confused. CLK, CLC, CLS etc... all mean nothing to me.
CLK is dead. used to be a E46 coupe competitor. based on old C
CLC is still alive, used to be E46 Compact competitor. based on old C
CLS is a 4 door 'coupe' priced between the E and the S..

the CLK was based on the old c-class platform, to rival the 3xx Ci, which it did.

the C class sports coupe was a rival to the compact.
instead of killing it off, they gave it the nose of the new C class and removed a strip of plastic from the rear and restyled the rear light clusters.
it's still a crap car though

Old CLK was based on the C Class.
New CLK (E Class Coupe) based on the E Class.

No S class involved.

As for the rest, SL CL GL CLC CLS its pretty simple, here is my understanding:

SL = Large luxury sports coupe
SLK = Smaller sports coupe
CL = Large Luxo barge coupe
CLS = Large "coupe" with 4 doors
CLC = Rubbish
