Which Asian city for 5 days?

I'm probably heading to Australia in June to meet some friends. It seems to be cheaper to do a 'round the world' style trip, at least when it comes to the plane tickets.

I'm doing a route like London - NY - Sydney - ? - London.

However, I'm not so sure where to stop on the way back. The main 3 options are:

Bangkok.
Singapore.
Hong Kong.

But I suppose any major city in the Asian area, potentially stretching all the way east towards Dubai is a possibility. I'm not sure where to go though, they all look nice. The advantage of Singapore and Hong Kong is that a lot more people speak English as opposed to Thai or other languages.

Technically, I could always skip out NY and go for 2 in the Asia area, but I really want to see parts of NY, even if its only for a few days. As I'm spending most of my time in Australia, I'll be there for a max of 5 days.

Do any OCUKers have experience with the Asia area, and any personal recommendations? Any advice is welcomed!

personally i'd go to HK as i've never been before and it's on my list.
Singapore is great, but 5 days is a waste imo. i'd fly out to KL or somewhere else in Malaysia within that time, flights are cheap enough if you book well in advance.

Air Asia is cramped and not particularly exciting, but then it's a low-cost airline.
however, they are VERY cheap if you book well enough in advance. i flew from KK to Brunei (i think) and it was £5 for 2 tickets. about £15 including taxes and then another £5 or so for baggage. taxes are so much cheaper than europe

I've seen all of those and I'd go back to Hong Kong first. Unique place.

As the obove poster said though, with Air Asia, you can probably do all three in 5 days for the price of a McDonalds.

5 days is too much for Hong Kong i think, if you stay away from NT, you can see the rest in 3 days (I think)....

Hong Kong 2 days, from there you can go to Malaysia for £70-80 return with AirAsia for a few days
HK - Malaysia is quite far though, you'd waste a day getting there and back.
singapore - KL on the other hand is an hour or so

what i'd recommend is to go to singapore, and then fly to Kuching. loads to do there, more than KL probably. and you don't get orangutans in KL :p

I've been to and love them all.. however, Bangkok is my favourite. It's such a bizarre city - loads of stunning temples & fascinating culture, interesting markets - in the city and also out i.e. the floating market, good nights out & v. inexpensive. You could also take a plane down to the islands for 2 or 3 out of the 5 days.

To be honest, it depends what you are into doing and who you're going with as well.

HK is an utter hole. so overated. you definitely don't want to do 5 days there. 2 max!

choose singapore, i regret not going there instead :(

All 3 are a good choice, but singapore didnt really do much for me, despite having been there many times (to see friends), HK and Bangkok have so much more to do as well as having a lot of culture tied to them. You can spend 5 days in Bangkok easily (HK too, my father used to live there so I know it quite well).
If you like cycling google Grasshopper Tours Bangkok. I did the Bangkok countryside tour with my girlfriend last week and it was a real eye opener, showed a completely different side to Thailand that Ive not seen, and Ive been living here for a year already, you wont regret it. Email me if you want more info :)

Thimphu. It's pretty expensive, you have to sign up to a Bhutanese tour company and you have to pay something like £100 per day for as long as you stay. It's actually worth the money for the scenery and views alone.

I'd go for Bangkok. Seek will also agree with me!

I stayed in Singapore for 4 months and I've visited Hong Kong, but they're both tiny little places and if you go to Bangkok you don't have to go more than 2 hours out of the city to be in complete wilderness riding an elephant, which you can't do on the two little islands, and you can come back in the evening and eat whipped cream off a pair of potentially transgender hookers, which you would be doing in SG or HK anyway.

For 5 days, Bangkok. Lots to see and do.

Singapore is very nice but I think 5 days is too much.

Hong Kong isn't that great and 2 days is certainly enough there.

I spent 4 days in HK and I reckon that's enough to get a lot done. It's quite different, although I have never been to the other places so I can't comment on them.
