Citroen C2 VTS

If you can find one in budget, have a look for an Ibiza FR TDI.

Fun car to drive, plenty of power (180bhp remapped. 130bhp standard) and low insurance. 50mpg on the motorway that you say you'll do.

Far better than that disgusting C2.

The wife wanted one of these a year or so ago. Then we went to look at one. She didn't want one anymore after opening the door and sitting in it.

I actually like the looks and the engine isn't half bad. However the build and interior were awful, and that's coming from/comparing it to a Clio (which I might add for the haters I have never had issue with any other french cars we've owned build or interior :p).

Doors felt ever so thin it was silly, and generally felt naff.

If it were a 2/3k car then fair enough (well even then that's early 172 money :p) but for this money far better choices.

172 or 182 spring to mind, yes they are more on insurance but it's a much better car overall. 206 GTi in either varient would also be nicer imho.

The wife went for an 05 Yaris T Sport in the end and bar the engine not being as pokey as a 2 litre Clio it's been an awesome little car. Even though she's only let me drive it once so far :p

5k will get you an 04ish plater I'd have though, a nice enough 1.5 engine, decent looks with all the tte kit on and nice alloys, air con, sun roof, and pretty bullet proof.

She even went for the 5 door which weirdly looks ok in the flesh, and I normally hate 5 door hatches like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1228470.htm

Absolute bag of......owned one for 2 n a half years. Warning lights come on when sensors get damp. Seat rails broke. Faulty ECU. New pads and discs after 10k. Got rid before the warranty ran out.

Strongly advise against tbh

It sounds like you want something that looks fast instead of actually being a bit rapid. How about the current shape Celica? Or MR-S?

Basically want something small, looks sporty, with a wee bit of poke, not a flying machine, that's cheapish and to run and insure.

Nowhere near decided on something for definite yet, just having a look. Was just interested to see what folks opinions were of this car. Keeping my options open.

I'll stand by my Yaris T Sport suggestion if that's the criteria I think :) Or a Lupo GTi maybe?

I'd go for a Fiesta Zetec-S over this or as others have said the Clio. The Zetec-S IMO is a good middle ground car between the C2 and the Clio. It would be worth getting some insurance quotes to see what will fit your budget.

Too many choices. The Yaris T-Sport does look quite nice I have to say. Will need to have a good look at some other options then. Going down to have a look at the C2 tomorrow night anyway as it's just down the road from my work so got nothing to loose. Will have a look and see what other cars the guys got, just for some ideas. Will report back tomorrow.

Weeny crap engine, standard French tin can build quality, about as much road feel as driving a pillow..... the list goes on.

This.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but i'd rather be shot at with a Barrett M82 than own a Citroen.

surprise surprise at the ever apparent snobbery of ocuk :D

weeny crap engine?!! its a group 8 hot hatchback, you expecting some sort of verocious 300bhp V6 or something? they are brilliant little engines which are very well suited to the purpose of the car.

its the successor of the Saxo VTS for gods sake, its chuckable, rev-happy, nimble nature is every bit relevant to the market it is aimed for.

sure, this may not be the car for the OP, but the amount of presumptions people come out based on two small chevrons stuck on the front is laughable.

please, let me be the first to pull the trigger :)

Snobbery? Naah. Its just crap.

That's as hot as our current weather, and yes, I was expecting something better for a "Hot Hatchback" :p:p:p

In no way is this a 'successor' to a Saxo VTS IMO

The saxo vts weighed next to nothing so it was quite fast, the C2 VTS however is just not :p

Aren't you a delight. :p

you set yourself up a beaut, it would have been rude not to ;)

oh we all know its not actually that 'hot' so to speak, but it still falls within the the intended market slot of 'hot hatchbacks', i.e. chuckable shopping trolley with power to boot.

tried it have you?

the saxo VTS was half a second quicker to 60... not too much of a difference considering the significantly higher safety standards of the C2 generation and the unevitable additional weight this brings...

that was shocking :p

i'm just asking for a little consideration before deciding to slate a car based on so little, but thats like asking for the world round these here parts :D

I have driven both as a matter of fact.

I found the C2 to have little to no feeling in the steering (far too light), the interior is questionable (most parts i could pull off with my hands) and it just simply felt no where near as fast as a saxo vts which was like a go kart round country lanes.

Citreon should have badged the VTS as a VTR IMO

I would spend my 5,000 quids on a clio 172 cup phase 2. More reliable, superior handling and more power :)

i still don't believe you have going by those ever so predictable comments, but lets bite anyway. :D

the steering is personal preference, it was noticably recieved by many reviewers at the time as being a brilliant chassis, very sharp and reactive. there are a few poor points about this car as there are on any car, but the handling is not one of them!

interior is never going to impress anyway, it has no need to, its a fiesty shopping kart which gets you to the shops and back as quickly and as fun as possible, its not about the interior. it never has been with hot hatches.

the whole 'omgz pulled half the interior apart with one touch' comments never ceases to amuse with french cars. theres overexagerating and then theres simply taking the ****. c'mon you can do better than that :p

your also forgetting its a group 8 ;) the clio is group 16! completely different league in terms of running costs.

..and if you really want to dwell into the interiors of the two, lets be honest, the C2 interior is far more apt and modern in styling, spacious and generally more attractive to it's preliminary market, young people.
