I'd assume its because overthe course of the night you were mainly taking in air (eg lowering the concentration of the eventual fart) rather digesting stuff which eventually leaks out the foul broken down gases etc.

I've always thought the bath was worse. It's like they go through some kind of metamorphosis on the way up, and when the bubble bursts it's just firing spores of pure terror straight into your nostrils.
