Golf vs Focus

Which do you think is better and why?
These two appear to be class leader's if there are any other contendors then say and I will add them to this post

.

What engines? Ive been looking into this class a lot recently, and it totally depends what you require.

Depends on which Golf and Focus really. The RS is well very epic but the Mk6 Gold GTD is very nice compared to really any Focus on the same sort of spec.

Well then probably the Focus cause theres about 3 different sorts of 1.6 Golfs and about 5 million different sorts of Focus that you can choose from.

I was recently faced with the same question, I had £14k to spend and needed a five door, reasonably quick (and nimble) car in return.

It was between the MK5 Golf GTi or the Focus ST, and here is what I found;

The Golf seems to be appreciated as the better built car, slightly better handling, was more composed (Boring in my eyes), and had a slightly more grown up image.

But, the Focus was more fun, faster, and didn't have tartan seats. (Plus I could get a top spec, low mileage example for my money!) But the thing that really sold the Focus to me was the fact that if I went for a Golf, I'd have been buying a car that was a year or two older with twice the mileage, for the same money.

Not really. just becuase I am not buying now doesn't mean I wont be in the future . I want to know what the class leader's are , and why they are class leaders.

Well for your money you are best getting a Focus. Golfs cost too much for what they are. Like a previous poster said he got a younger car for the same money.

When you look at resale value a Golf will probaly be cheaper.

I would go for a golf tbh

Cracking motors they are. If your looking for somthing that has great performance, with good mpg. I would get the golf 1.4 tsi. My mums has an 08 plate golf tsi and one cracking fast car. It does around 40mpg to a gallon. Great looks imo aswell.

The focus are nice, dont get me wrong but I think they are just too plain. Although, their interior is far superior than the golfs.

It wont. Years ago somebody said this and I went off and geeked out like mad comparing total discounts when new with expected residuals and made a big chart basically saying the Golfs uber residuals are cancelled out by its comical list prices and poor discounting from retailers.

Golf interior (kitted out in cow) trumps the Focus IMO. Looks better exteriorly too in both bongo and sport variant. But it commands a premium when it comes to the price.

Only thing for me if we are comparing engines of both the GTi and ST is the V5 in the ST is a peach sounding of an engine

. Shame to see the R32 discontinued though.

If you bought a MK5 56 plate Golf GT TDI via a online broker yours for 15.5k these were also the first which came with heated leather as standard. 3 years later they have a value around of 11-12k, long life servicing means one £160 service and say £300 on a front set of tyres. Not many new cars will cost you 4-4.5k for servicing and deprication in 3 years.

Even my GTI which has been hammered in value I have been offered around 12-13k for a almost 4 year old GTI I paid 19k for.

The new rip off prices for the MK6 Golf have been good for the MK5 values.
