I always was told that the blunt edge of a large knife struck at the middle of the nut sorted it out

I suppose it matters if you want the milk or not, personally I think the stuff is the spawn of the devil.

Small drill to create a hole, drain the milk then a hacksaw to open it. Seemed to work pretty well when my dad did it, can't say I've tried it myself as I'm not that keen on coconuts.
