Too much coffee?

I started drinking coffee last year after considering it as a natural laxative; Basically, if I don't do the loo in the morning, I'm constipated and in pain/discomfort for the rest of the day, taking coffee in the morning made this a lot better.

So, now I'm drinking it daily, often twice in the morning to ease things up and then later on in the day pre-training at the gym. Surely this can't be good for my health? My GF seems convinced it will speed the ageing process and have other harmful effects over time?

How much do you consume daily? Am I drinking too much?

I think it's fine. Think about all the doctors and nurses who drink coffee all night so they can keep on top of their game.

3 cups a day and you worry? Whilst it's not great - especially when working out and on a strict diet - 3 cups a day is hardly anything to worry about especially if it improves your life with regard to IBS or whatever problem you have.

It can be a bit dangerous in that it can cause things like arrhythmia but you'd have to drink a serious amount for it to get to that stage. A few cups through the day wont do any harm.

It's true, numerous nutritionist labelled it as a recommendation considering the amount of caffeine within a cup of coffee, but it can create an argument just like the recommended intake of alcohol, depends from person to person.

I don't have IBS, even went to see about it. :)

Over the years my body has just got into the routine of doing it in the morning. Coffee just makes it easier if I'm heading out early to work/uni.

I'd have thought they advised against it due to the caffeine. Whilst it isn't inherently bad for you, it doesn't do anything good for you.

But yeah, 3 cups is fine.

I was an one stage in my early 20's on 7/8 big mugs (or starbucks) a day. It didn't do any real harm but I didn't feel great for it either, I think more than a few cups a day is probably inadvisable (not science, just my opinion).

That said, I only have 3 or 4 cups a day now (and cups rather than big mugs) and a few months back I tried to go without for a week (bet with my girlfriend...) and I really struggled - I was really in a foul mood for a few days in particular.

Generally, I'd say too much is bad news in a variety of ways, not just physical health wise...

It has more caffine, but I can't say it makes a difference to going to the loo, lol.

It's considered a healthier alternative due to the amount of antioxidants and vitamins and minerals, plus the fact it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, dental cavities, kidney stones etc.

my beloved OH makes me about 6 cups a day, but I probably only drink half of each one. seriuosly couldn't do without coffee though.
