Does it HAVE to be one of them? If not, I'd seriously recommend you get some nice cheap solid wood worktop and affix some ikea legs to it, that way you can get it as big as you want.

Last year, I bought 8 meters (720mm depth 30mm thick) of rubber wood work top for under £280.

The thing I like about my Mikael desks - other than the clean Scandinavian lines - is that the worktop is supported from front to back, all the way down. It makes for a totally steady work area.

While I'm sure the Fredrik will be solid enough, I'm not sure what the extra 20 quid pays for, other than more fresh air around the knees, and a cable-tidy that can be more cheaply replaced by cable ties, hooks or any of the other DIY methods.

One thing to bear in mind, at least with the Mikael [and the Fredrik looks no different]: If you've got a big long tower case, don't expect it to go neatly under the desk. The backplane gets in the way. At least it does with my CM Stacker Original; a more petite case might slide under.

You'll only end up throwing this away in a couple of years. Waste of money tbh :p

Personally I like the Vika Amon table tops and legs. They're surprisingly strong too and can support my bulk for a few seconds. Plus you don't care if you throw it away.

The first is passable, the second is horrible, have you tried looking at office furniture suppliers.

I wanted a desk without a keyboard pull out due to not having enough room for the mouse... Plus I wanted it quite long.

Any suggestions? :)

I quite like the first one.

[...] Desk units are such a rip [...]
My Mikael desk has been solid, amply sized and cost me about 7 quid a year.

Undoubtedly there are better desks out there. But for that sort of cost?

The money saved could be put towards computer bits, magic props and dodgy swimming trunks. For instance.

He didn't say a desk, he said a wooden worktop with legs screwed on, they can be incredibly cheap for what they are.

I've got a Frederik and I have had it for at least three years.

It is a good desk and I got the one with the top shelf too.

Even after my mother mutilated it by taking it apart wrongly it is still sturdy and has previously help a 22" Monitor and a 24" iMac.

It now seats a 27" iMac which you can see here...

Get the Fredrik desk. Its is very solid and stable, where as the Mikael isn't. The mikael is made of a rubbish cardboard honey comb structure.
I work on the desk department at ikea!
