I'm not keen on the need to make a point out of this disaster.

Why not just give directly to the two charities in question?

I'm inclined to agree, but it saved me doing the research to find out who wouldn't be combining their physical aid with their own brand of spiritual aid.

Seems a bit petty, to try and make a statement from someone else's suffering.

What's wrong with just giving to 'normal' charities? Plenty of non-christians do already

I'm sure the people suffering (in Haiti) don't care who gives the money to help them (as long as its given), whether it comes from a non-religious or religious group, pity that Mr Dawkins seems he has some point too make on the back of the suffering people in Haiti...

Rather tasteless trying to score point off other peoples suffering :(

Still thankfully Richard Dawkins isn't the typical atheist/agnostic and is more akin to the KJV evangelical type that pop up in SC for a few weeks every so often before getting banned.

Pretty pathetic that anyone would try and further their cause by using a tragedy like the Haitian earthquake imo.

The list of the thirteen charities who are members of the Disasters Emergency Committee in this country are:

* ActionAid
* British Red Cross
* CAFOD
* CARE International
* Christian Aid
* Concern
* Help the Aged
* Islamic Relief
* Merlin
* Oxfam
* Red Cross
* Save the Children
* Tearfund
* World Vision

What he said, there will be quite a lot of people who specifically DO NOT want to give money to an organisation that will be spouting religious nonsense to people. Personally I find the mixing of charity and religion disgusting with Catholic based charities for instance having done decades of harm, preventing people in Africa getting condom, spreading lies about going to hell if they don't procreate and so condom's being bad, and limiting their support to other groups who will only do the same.

Its fairly common for an established Charity " group" in an area to help other groups bring in help aswell. However they deny this help to those who for instance, would give out condoms free and the like, which is the behaviour I find particularly disgusting in a country ravaged by the spread of AID's.

I really don't want to go any further in to it and won't reply to continue a discussion because this isn't the time or place.

However, theres plenty of charities out there who aren't overtly religious and don't mention that their presence in several area's is dependant on adhering to certain religious practices/behaviours/standards.

As the post I quoted, this is an easy place to donate to a list of causes that will not have anything to do with religion.

Even if you don't donate through them, its a good list for which to start from.

I don't care if they think I give a toss about "God(s)", I donated via my preferred medium because I felt it was the right thing to do considering the disaster. I don't care if the charity is religiously motivated, so long as they do what they promise to.

I do however hate the media trend of "Britons dead/missing/on the hunt for" headline. It's like "Disaster in X country" as the 3rd more important headline in the news then the next day it's first headline "OH WAIT BRITONS DIED TOO".

I hope no more people need to suffer and that all the promised aid goes a long way. That is all that should matter.

Isn't the Red Cross just as guilty of not using all the money they are given for aid?

I wish I could recall where I read it, but I think in the case of Hurricane Katrina they got a massive wedge of the money meant to help rebuild after the disaster. The Red Cross don't rebuild so the amount theys pend in giving aid is a fraction of what they had donated to them.

Because we don't want our money being spent on story books, etc....
