Help!

Our 10 year old Peugeot 106 was misfiring this morning. Took a lot of revs to get it going and is shaking a lot at low speeds in first gear. Changed up into second going down a hill and the car stalled. Engine management light has came on too.

Now because it's misty and muggy this morning that it might be a spark plug problem due to the fact it's misfiring. It's just been serviced and MOT'd so it's unlikely to be anything major right ?

Please tell me this isn't going to cost £500 to fix :(

any advice appreciated.

how do i do that ?

It's gonna cost you £500 to fix ;)

But seriously, if you don't know the basics, get a workshop manual at least, it will explain each component and what to do to look for a misfire.

Trying to explain all the leads etc here will be like pulling teeth.

the easiest thing to do is to spray some wd40 around the engine bay, esp on your plug leads. If that fixes the problem then it's damp getting into the ignition system, and you should get some new spark plug leads

thanks for the help guys

during the recent service they changed some of the spark plugs as this isn't the first time this has happened.

Has been fine throughout the cold weather until today.

106 has a block of coil packs iirc not pencil coils, i'd push down on all the HT lead connections make sure everything is tight with those.

If that doesn't work inspect each HT lead for damage, check for water in the connections.

Provided all the plugs are new they should be ok.

I'd also check for any air leaks.

how much is a new head gasket ?

You're probably looking at ditching the car if it's head gasket. If you've done damage to the head gasket then you'd require at least a new head, plus lots of time for a mechanics, I'd say around £500...

This is the worst case scenario, but I'd imagine you'd be fine and it's just a blockage or dodgy connection.

Open up the oil cap and check for mayonaise.

LULZ at all this HG nonsense.

Absolutely, doesn't sound likely, but still it's plausable but highly unlikely.....

Stick with the leads and coils firstly Neil, make sure everything is connected up and that the connections are clean. Might be as simple as a dodgy lead.

Gf has just taken the car out and she says it's fine and the engine management light has gone out. The fog and generally humidity has now cleared so it's sounds like a spark plug/lead problem ?

How much am i looking at for a new set of spark leads ?

Last night was very humid and damp, would explain why the issue has rearisen. I suspect some moisture somewhere in the electrics.

Missus has taken the car in and the guy is saying it needs a new catalytic converter at £260 for parts and labour

Is he trying to pull a fast one ?

I had this on my 328 on saturday, was running on 3, took all the coilpacks off, cleaned them and refitted and tis been great.
