Where are all the folders?

So we need 30ish people to go out and buy a GTX-295 :p

OcUK could do a 1 hour buy get one free deal!
Do want!

As an aside, what sort of PPD should I expect from a Q9450@stock, AMD Phenom II 810@stock, AMD Athlon II 620@stock, AMD Phenom II 940@stock and a GTX 285 per item?

If it's a decent amount I'll switch over from BOINC.

tbo the 285 is the only one really worth swapping over.
The SMP client on the quads will give you a few thousand ppd each - but the 285 will give 9-10k ppd by it's self

Is that a few thousand per quad or for all of them together? Last time I did F@H my graphics card died a few months later, not sure if it's related or not :P (GTX 280).

I am not sure how much better at folding the Q9450s are, but my Q6600 at stock manages 3.5K PPD if left alone to just fold. Though due to VMWare's shocking support for certain NICs I have stopped my SMP folding as it was too much hassle getting it going again whenever I had to restart my PC.

My two 265's on the other hand are giving me about 12K PPD :D [12K combined, that is] Not bad considering one is not-on for a fair few hours a day sometimes.

I see, that sounds pretty promising then. All of the above machines are on 24/7 except the 940/285. Once my Rosetta queue disappears, I'll switch to F@H and see if I can give a small boost to us :)

EDIT: What's the best graphics card to fold on per watt/PPD/initial cost?

gtx260 (216sp) if buying new gen secondhand - £70-80 for 8k ppd
8800gs if old second hand £30 for 3.4k (also very low watts)

gtx250 eco also offer good watts/ppd - but are more expensive £/ppd
upping the shadder clocks is the key (and droping the core also helps heat and running costs with minimal ppd drop)

Good advice there from SS, it's got me thinking though:

What is ppd/watt like for the for the i7 bigadv units? Although it's a big initial cost for the i7, what are the running costs like?

Aside from there being no second hand nvidia cards in the MM, I've looked at the power consumption of the GTX 260-216 55nm card and it comes out at around 110W.

For 24/7 running, a single 260 would use 2.64 units a day and at 15p/unit, works out to about £11.44 per month.

but if you down clock the core and up the shadder it's more like 90w (saves you £2 a month) and the fan never goes over 40%
After a 10% paycut it's the least my office can do - well that my argument for the gtx260 by my feet.

I do think the bigadv units offer a real alturnative - 25k ppd is MASSIVE

You can also lower your thermostat saving you money on electric/gas [delete as appropriate] bill :D

I justify my electric use by never having the heating on in my room and not owning a TV, HiFi or console. I also avoid turning on the lights if I can help it and always completely unplug something if I am not using it.

It is amazing how much stuff you switch off or avoid using when trying to justify folding! :p

lol, that is so true, I've replaced every lightbulb in my house with energy efficient ones, and preach to others about turning things off at the plug!

Same here, i am in the dark :D

I think for a team of our size we do really well, however since the GPU client came out the balance of power has undoubtedly shifted away from the CPU folders, which was always going to be bad news for a CPU-biased forum.

We went through a period of billy-no-name gaming teams rocketing up the leaderboard because they were sitting on folding dynamite. The shorter GPU turnaround also makes part-time folding more realistic for the casual contributors - the dedicated 24/7 folder isn't rewarded like they used to be.

Our two greatest strengths of the time - overclocking CPUs and dedication - have been nullified by the changes that have happened. Being outgunned by new and rival teams that adapted more quickly took the edge off the competitiveness, and as a result interest has dropped and taken with it some big contributors to the forum.

I'm sure we'll be back. As long as people keep grinding away and keep us on the front page the opportunity to bounce back will always be there.

Having moved out of a place where electricity was included in the bill, I'm now paying my way and drowning slowly under rent and council tax on a PhD stipend. Living with the g/f, she doesn't really like the PC being on all the time, and I was finding it more and more difficult to finish WUs. In the end, I did a favour testing someone else's CPU for them in my board and damaged one of the pins that holds the heatsink on. It works, but I wouldn't want to load it particularly heavily a la folding. As much as I hate to say it, I'm still into high-end performance, but the lack of funds for tinkering and upgrades has steadily left me behind the field and I now have better things to be spending my money on.

It's a shame really, as I haven't really lost the bug. I used to have 3 PCs going and a couple of graphics cards in my prime, but things have conspired against me. It doesn't help that some of the fun and camaraderie has gone form this forum, though I suppose it's a vicious cycle and it's a pretty lame excuse :(

along with sticking 1.8v through the Q6600 in my old machine.

Gutted for you, generally. But a word of warning.. I was playing around with a friend's Q6600 earlier today trying to get it to do silly speeds under his new watercooling setup (basically a 25l jerry can and a central heating pump @ 17l/min :D) and we got bored and put 1.9v through it, no problems

sustained 1.8v because he doesn't have a clue I did that at 3.4Ghz on air won't do the chip any good lol.

Just FYI - I'm back after some time off for moving and getting things sorted out here.

I don't have the HP I used to have, but should be able to clear 25-30K PPD pretty easily.

By the way, where has Uncle Rich99million gone off too ? Not seen any posts from him in any of the recent threads.
