1999 Impreza, Project Track Car

OP the turbo is overheating as you're running such high boost through it surely?

I can't remember if you uprated the intercooler or not? EDIT - I see I/C is not standard. Any way of getting a bigger one into there? :p

edit nevermind its the air intake temp thats too high leading to detonation isnt it ?

Bigger intercooler / better airflow ?

I think the problem is more to do with the turbine temps, the turbo is water cooled, after a hard run you can hear the water boiling in the turbo housing. Im thinking I need to get a bigger radiator and perhaps better piping to the turbo.

I don't understand... am I right in thinking that

You're using water injection to cool the turbo, along with an intercooler?

If the pipework and IC are too small its going to be causing a restriction. Which won't be helping!

Feel free to correct, me.. I'm trying to remember the stuff I read about when Intercooling my car :p

If its the turbine thats a concern I would look at EGT temps, possibly riching things up a touch or shifting to a larger turbo, the pressure in the exhaust manifold is generally a concern when its double that of the intake.

I wouldn't worry about the water boiling, its not at high enough pressure to not boil local to a turbo, the shut down boiling will just dry the thermosyphon flow that cools the turbo without the engine running.

Its not water injection or anything like that, the turbo is cooled using the cars normal cooling system. Im just concerned its getting a bit hot.

I think the EGT's are the problem, especially after having the headers heat wrapped. Hopefully if i can improve the cooling to the turbo it'll help.

Courtenay Sport do an intercooler uprgrade kit for the Vectra.

As part of the kit comes a massively enlarged water radiator. They found that once you remap the vectra to 300bhp the turbo gets very hot quickly and the coolant temps can reach 106. With the uprated water radiator the temps only went to about 103 and recovered back down to sub 90 degrees much much quicker.

Bigger radiator might be a worthwhile step if somebody makes one.

Other way round surely - if you have a cage you need a harness.
Both are correct.
If you fit harnesses to a car without a cage then you can't "duck" out of the way when the roof comes in during a roll, so you break your neck instead. :(

That's pretty normal.
Have you got an EGT gauge?

800-900deg C is ok for the turbo but not any higher.
Uk valves will start to complain way before the turbo will anyway as they aren't sodium filled like the Sti.

If you fit one, it's a good idea to put it after the turbo, in the downpipe (lambda sensor better in there too instead of the collector, should either of those two fail (and they do) bits wont wreck the turbo.

Even in something like an Atom?

No idea to be honest, I just know it's specifically forbidden to complete road sections in a stage rally car with a helmet, and it's forbidden in road rallies too. I'm unsure of the law behind it as I've never really given it a lot of thought (never needed to)

Plus the fact you'd look a right tit :D

Thats why bucket seats are designed to be taller than the drivers head, with the strength to hold the weight of the car during a roll. A lad on the 106 rallye forum rolled his car, and is only here today because he had buckets. they prevented the roof collapsing all the way down basically, and so he didnt get crushed.

Personally i can't see it being illegal to use a helmet on uk roads whilst driving a car, i see several people doing it during the summer, Top Gear did it when the stig took the 7 up north, if it was illegal now doubt that story would have hit the news.

Ranger07 - This car must be really shifting now, besides the overheating issue, have you got any other plans for it? other than just get the thing on the track and enjoy it? :)

Yeh me too, I wouldn't fancy going helmetless in something like an atom, or caterfield. Only take a little stone or soemthing to flick up onto your face. wouldnt be pretty.

Im really happy with the power now, its loud as hell and pulls like nothing else I've driven. When I got it back from the RR session I took it a run up a back road to test it. Was driving gently out of town just warming it up when some guy in an EVO 9 pulled out from a side street and follows me. The whole way out of town he's on my back bumper, I could hear him reving his engine and his dump valve hissing. Now my boy racer days are long over but I just couldnt resist putting my foot down when we finally got out of town. I really didnt know what would be quicker but Im pleased to say the Impreza was a lot faster. Poor guy must have been furious cause lets face it, it does look like an old banger :D

Plans for it now are to get it painted sort out the turbo issue and get it to a track day. The problem is finding the time to work on it thats why things have slowed down a bit in recent months.

Cool beans. Take my email address (in trust) - When you do a track day let me know and if it's not too far I'll do some photos of you. Never hurts to get some extra practice in :)
