Another spec me thread - for my Dad

Yeh, twas a decent enough car but when you've had a car for 3 years and spent 75k miles in it, you're not going to fancy another one 6 months later, especially as he wants to be keeping this for 3 years ish.

The X type is also surprisingly cramped, especially the back seats - surprising considering it's Mondeo based and there's tons of space in the back of mine. Interior quality is also "questionable" - rattles and squeaks aplenty!

Spoke to him last night - His preference at the moment is a 325i Touring or a C220CDi

He did throw some curveballs in there though, although he does admit they are curveballs! Apparently the Mondeo is on the list, but he wants full leather and its nearly impossible to find - seems to only be an option on the Ghia (which isnt that high spec) or part of the "Mondeo Individual" pack on the Titanium models but that's a £2250 option new!

The more surprising option is a 159 Sportwagon (brand new probably).... He is aware of the epic depreciation but he's still tempted. Apparently my 156 got under his skin a little bit! He's considering brand new because he wants built in Nav and very few used ones have it...

How big is the dog? If it's anything other than a little rat dog then the 3 series may not be the best choice as the estate is pretty small.

No ideas on the actual dimensions, but is a brand spanking Skoda Superb Estate worth a look?

1.8 TSi DSG in Elegance spec is around 24k methinks

She's a small boxer. Is the 3 really that small?

My parents have a Irish setter and dismissed the 3 series touring as the boot was to small. It's much smaller than a Mondeo and from what I remember there's less space than a focus/astra estate.

That's good because he's thinking of buying one for 26k new :)

What's wrong with them/why dont you like them?

I cannot recommend an E Class for this budget. It will only buy a W202 (?) which is the 2002-2009 shape. Thats a lot of money for a car which dates from a time when you could walk into a dealer and buy a brand new E39. The new E Class isnt yet in budget.

So, that leaves the C Class, 3 Series, 5 Series as credible alternatives if he wants to move away from Audi. The 3 Series SE suspension setup is indeed odd - its 'smoother' than the M Sport but the secondary ride quality is rubbish, its a bit joggly. In all honestly the M Sport is better - its firmer but its behaves more predictably. 5 Series SE isn't affected in this way.

Current shape C Class is also a great car.

Just seems like a boat load of money for a Suburu with no doubt questionable quality fixtures and fittings, never driven one so i've got no idea from that side of things, i'd rather pay less and buy the new shaped Accord Touring.

However i'd only do that after not buying several other cars (26k budget).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with them but they are cheap Japanese cars. This means on the used market they command absolutely stunning value for money and are unbeatable in these terms. However it also means that to spend £26k on one, even new, is ridiculous.

Go and look at how much, say, an 04 plate costs now and you'll see why

Have to admit interior quality was a concern, but we havent seen one yet.

There are loads of cars I'd buy with that sort of budget, but his requirements are quite different to mine :)

Very good point, running costs are a concern and depreciation has to be a big part of that (althogh long term, 3~4 year depreciation, not 6 months).

The C class is probably top of the list currently, that was an "outside the box" suggestion

He looked at the accord a few times when he's looked at his last 2 cars and just didnt like them - mainly interior trim things. I suspect the Subary may have the same issues though!

the Subaru Legacy is a very good car, although as has been mentioned, it seems a little silly to buy one new considering how fantastic a deal they are second hand.

I really like the new V70, but finding a petrol in budget is going to be impossible.
The alternative is to buy new, but i suspect it'll be out of his budget somewhat.
The C class is a good shout if it's not too small.

The Subaru will probably be worse than the Accord so I'd rule that out straight away if he thinks that.
