*** Official Mass Effect 2 Thread ***

I think you can rationalise it easily. Though I won't be pirating it myself, I can understand the need to get my hands on it as soon as possible, especially if there is such an option out there. If someone hasn't pre-ordered the game and want instant gratification, they could well decide to pirate it. If Bioware offered it for download now, then they'd remove the need to pirate for some.

They're not going to though, as it would require more admin to authorise retail outlets to release early too.

If someone is prepared to pirate the game to get at it a week earlier that person needs to get some perspective. Either they're getting it legit or they aren't, chances are for 99% of people the've already decided whether they're gonna buy it or not. It was leaked last week, not last month. Theres no point changing plans when the wheels are already turning for for a 26/29th release. Attempting to fast track the release will cost them more money than they'd gain with such short notice.

And as Sid said... retail vendors are likely to have a very good reason to sue for the loss of sales if they suddenly open Digital Download early.

Can't decide if I should keep my Play order, or grab it from the EA Store for £26.24 using the discount code...

If you download and install using the EA download manager, the download manager may (or may not) start up every time you play the game. It won't affect anything if you're offline though. There is a way of trying to avoid the download manager starting up, though it may not work. Out of the 9 games I have installed in the way below (including The Saboteur and Mass Effect) only Medal of Honor Airborne is annoying enough to need the EADM to start up with it.

What you should do (and what I'll do since I can use my serial to download using the EA download manager, and it's faster) is:

- download ME2 using the EA download manager
- once it's done that, it won't automatically install. It will display text saying "install"
- navigate to folder the game files have been downloaded to, usually a folder in C:\ProgramData\Electronic Arts\EA Core\cache\
- close the EA download manager and use the EA setup file in the above folder to install ME2. You may have to paste the serial number EA emailed to you, as the EA download manager automates this process and puts the serial in for you.
- let the game install, activate and start up. It shouldn't require the EADM to start up with it, though you will have the option to start the game from the EADM. It will appear in your Windows Games Explorer list like any other game.

If anything goes wrong, you will still have the option to install ME2 from the EADM, as long as you haven't deleted the contents of the download folder or used the option in EADM to clear cache. But after you've checked your install is a success you will want to think about backing up the files or deleting them from your PC, as they and the eventual install will take up 14GB (28 GB if you count the downloaded files)!!!!
Cheers for the trouble in that answer - I was hoping I could avoid other digital distribution platforms, or perhaps streamline them into Steam where possible.

From what you said thought its enough to make me avoid it - think Ive been spoilt with Steam and its stability...

ps3ud0

No worries. Personally I prefer the non-Steam way as it's not tied to Steam, but can still be added as a shortcut in Steam if you want the overlay.

I have been tempted to download the game instead of waiting for the steam unlock. But only 1 week, might as well wait and keep my pc trojan free. lol. :-P

Am i the in minority when i say i've NEVER even considered downloading a game to get it early?

Anyway only 4 more days to go(or 3 hopefully) untill i get my hands on this :D

Got my Mass Effect pre-load download link from EA now!!

Damn.. it actually allowed you to install and use the launcher but when you try to start the game, it performs a release date check and obviously doesn't allow you to start the game just yet :)

I wonder what the official date/time is when the game unlocks in Europe. I know most places indicate that the release date is the 28th but in EA Store it actually said the 29th, until today when they removed release date completely from the Mass Effect 2 page. And the exact time would be nice to know as well..

Was almost pooping myself when i checked my emails today, saw 3 emails from Swiss Earl ( ea Store), as had some problems ordering the game, had thought that id bought 3 copies of the game which i couldnt have afforded, but the other 2 emails where for the extra content.

I get impatient sometimes, and I find it annoying that I am PAYING for the game, and someone who chooses not to pay is getting to play it before me and gloating about it on forums. If it was a longer period I may not wait, but I waited this long without downloading it, can wait till Friday now.

Gona be a awesome weekend :D

I got Dragon Age from EA and I'm fairly sure it unlocks when the date changes at midnight.

Got my email from GAME saying my pre-order has been processed.
Come on send it nao :D

Me to, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's on the doormat tomorrow, Wednesday at the latest. Nearly all my GAME pre-orders have shown up 2-3 days before official release.
