My father is after replacing his AWFUL :D Renault Laguna 1.6 2002.

I suggested an octavia as a good cheap car. His Laguna is unbelievably slow.

Im quite sure he will get a mondeo but my god the look on his face when i said " S K O D A"

His face looked utter disgusted at my suggestion. He is 47 and i guess hes grown up with VERY bad skodas. He knows VAG are decent cheap cars as he quite likes my seat ibiza.

I gues some people cant get over the badge. Does anyone else think like this?

Not any more.

One of the most successfull dealerships around me is a little Skoda dealer who has been consistently selling cars though the recession.

oh trust me i know. That laguna has broke down with so many stupid faults. Doing a simple task like replacing bulbs is a nightmare due to the angle of placement. He actually cut his wrists and hands quite badly. He is an engineer aswel! How the hell a woman is suppose to do it i do not know.

Hes the kinda guy that runs a car for a good 5-7 years so it needs to be built well. Something his Laguna is not!

Skoda has been a "good brand" for many years.
The Mk1 Fabia/Octavia from the late 1990's were great motors.

The Skoda brand has been descent for long enough now that I feel anyone still seeing that badge and going "Ergh, it's a Skoda" is just a little bit ignorant.

If you wanna take the pee out of a badge, do so with Kia :)

Whilst I don't see skoda in the negative light they may have had when they plonked engines in the back, to me, like SEAT are really only a poor mans VW but on saying that I prefer SEAT over VW.

But the thing is, many people see buying a Skoda as getting a "cut price" VW.
VW's are usually over-priced, you can spend a lot less on a Skoda and get just as much "car".
In numerous reviews the Octavia gets compared to the Golf and in numerous reviews the Octavia is described as the better car.

Nothing against VW's, but I feel they are artificially over-priced so that there is a market position for the cheaper Skoda's.
Alas too many people buy a badge rather than a car.

You could also turn that on it's head and say a VW is a dumb persons Seat/Skoda :p

Its a generation thing i find

Most people in the early to mid 20s dont have a problem. If you go even younger, to the current crop of new drivers aged 17 and 18, they have never grown up with the junk they used to produce pre VW era.

Those of us a bit older, remember the crap, but that doesnt bother us as we can accept that the Current Skodas are just VWs with a different frock on.

Older generation, like my mums generation in their 50s, dont seem to be able to grasp this at all though, and still refuse to believe they are anything other than skips cleverly disguised as a skoda with a sunroof (remember that old joke ? :D)

I have an '04 plate Octavia diesel estate with 135k miles on it. I love it.

I'm 27 years old and would feel uncomfortable about being seen driving a Reanult Laguna.

I'm 28 and will be picking up a Skoda Octavia 2.0 FSI Sport at the weekend.

I'm no brand/badge snob. With a baby on the way in March, I see a practical, reliable car that gets you a lot for your £'s on the second hand market.

Told a few people and they were like, "A Skoda?!?!?".
